A Legionary's Life: Review

    A Legionary's Life: Review

How many times have you played titles that have the Romans as their subject - perhaps like Imperivm: Civitas III or Rome: Total War among the many currently existing - but Have you ever wondered what the life of a legionnaire was like in detail and specifically? If so, your interest could be satisfied through this video game.

A Legionary's Life is an RPG whose gameplay is based entirely on turn-based combat, on the characteristics of the character and on numerous skill checks. The title uses the Unity graphics engine, with which a two-dimensional graphics environment is created. It is currently only available in English and German. It is currently available for PC, on the GOG and Steam platforms. A demo is also available on the official website.

As easily understood, the plot of A Legionary's Life is totally immersed in history. The title is set in 210 BC. It is therefore the story concerning Hannibal and Scipio, even before Rome became the capital of a vast empire.

However, the player will not play - like the most famous videogames set in this historical period - the role of the two famous historical figures. The main character is precisely any legionnaire who, starting from scratch, must assert himself between battles, events, disasters, and above all bring home the skin and then write history.

The graphics, although perfectly coherent and clear for the proposed subject, are not very detailed. On the contrary, it turns out to be very minimal and not very detailed. But that's not the central point of the game, because the latter is entirely focused on its gameplay. The game is divided into chapters, and for each of them there is a great battle. But before each battle, the main part of the game takes place in the camp.

Here you can perform different actions: training in javelin shooting, practicing with the sword and shield, working on your body through three different physical activities, having fun with various activities by spending money and increasing morale, carrying out additional guard shifts in order to to get a good opinion of the troops or above, finally buying or selling items.

Between the various battles and even during the time spent in the camp you can run into events that require specific check skills. In fact, the gameplay is not that typical of RPGs: the challenges must be chosen based on the characteristics of your legionnaire. In particular, in the early hours of the game you often die and the game ends shortly after starting. This is because the game is initially difficult to learn, despite the fact that the tutorial is very precise and clear. It is in fact to understand in detail the interesting mechanisms of A Legionary's Life: once you understand the game is almost all downhill.

Not only that, but we must consider the fact that the title was conceived and therefore developed to be replayed. To encourage this fundamental aspect, the player has points to be used to increase the character's statistics and get better equipment from the beginning of the game. These are cumulative and are obtained based on the score obtained during the different runs of the game.

Now let's talk about the whole audio aspect of the game. The game music is very suitable for the context and gives the player a sense of "old", "historical" that perfectly accompanies the player during his many hours of play. Other than that, the sound effects are very well researched, which are exactly suited to what they have to describe from an audio point of view.

However, there is a problem that appears to be very recurrent in many video games that fall within the scope of independent development. Many of the sound effects are not in line with the decibel level of the other sounds. In other words: many of the effects turn out to be louder or quieter than the others.

    A Legionary's Life: Review

So detailed and precise as to be fascinating, A Legionary's Life is a high-level, low-priced game steeped in history. The small - indeed very small - group that worked on the project proved more than capable of developing a video game. The arduous gameplay together with new events first to be discovered and then overcome make the game repetitive, but in a positive way.
