The arrival of virtual reality in our homes has certainly been an important event, made possible also thanks to companies like Sony that have continued to invest resources to support this new way of playing. Among the many games coming out in this 2018 our attention could not fail to end on Bravo Team, developed by Supermassive Games that already promised to be a killer application for Sony's PlayStation VR.

Bravo Team - PlayStation VR Review

Little plot, lots of action

Once our adventure has begun we will take on the role of one of the soldiers from the president's escort and after an assault on our convoy we will be called to fight to survive and above all to defeat the enemy threat. Although initially the setting seemed good and quite interesting, after a few minutes of play we realized that the developers did not put a real focus on the plot and on the characterization of the characters that in some ways seemed banal and not very incisive.

The real luck of Bravo Team is that even with an unconvincing plot it manages to entertain, thanks to one well-balanced and varied action component that manages to involve immediately, also allowing a level of immersion that makes it seem to be really on the battlefield. All this is made possible by the Sony viewer and the excellent integration of the motion controllers (both with the Joystick and the Aim Controller) that respond perfectly to our every movement.

Fun gameplay but ...

In Bravo Team, unlike what we have been able to experience in Farpoint, it is not possible to move freely in the playing area, but it will be necessary to move by selecting the point where we want to go. To be precise, it is not a teleportation system, but a movement exclusively from one coverage area to another. Once you have killed the enemies in front of you you will then have to select a cover placed further ahead, be it a car, a wall, or a barrel, so that you can continue in the mission and kill the remaining enemies.

The system developed by Supermassive Games, although it may seem cumbersome and impractical, after the first missions it becomes very simple to master. During the move, however, it will not be possible to revive an injured teammate or change direction, in fact once the cover has been chosen, the camera will frame our character through the third person technique until you reach your destination, then return to first person view.

From the point of longevity we can be quite satisfied, given i ten chapters which also offer a certain level of longevity, also given by the presence of Co-op mode which will allow us to replay some levels with our friends or with other players online. Alternatively, we will be able to undertake the main story together with a companion equipped with artificial intelligence who will assist our attacks, providing us with support, cover, and taking care of us in case we receive too much damage.

Bravo Team - PlayStation VR ReviewTechnically unsatisfactory

From a graphic point of view we weren't very impressed, either for the poorly detailed polygonal models that for unoriginal settings and not at all memorable. Instead, the weapons are excellent, which are very detailed and with a well-studied aiming system, which allows us to move the weapon precisely, so as to look in the viewfinder and kill the enemy on duty. All this is partly offset by the excellent final result in VR which still manages to leave you speechless for the almost total immersion, also made possible by the excellent general reactivity, even after sudden movements.

Another sore point is certainly the little variety of enemies, which are practically all the same and with a Artificial intelligence bordering on ridicule, even setting the difficulty to the maximum level. This situation is not noticed so much in the first chapters but becomes marked after a few hours of play, causing a decrease in attention and therefore in fun, a fundamental component in games of this type.

Speaking of the integration with the viewer, we can be very satisfied, in fact we have not encountered particular problems, the action has always been fluid and the controls have never required a new calibration. The combo with PlayStation 4 Pro allowed us to experience the game to its fullest potential even though we expected something more, both on the graphics side and on the gameplay, which is yes fun, but not as much as it could have been if it had been paired with a compelling storyline and Farpoint-like movement system.

Bravo Team - PlayStation VR Review

Bravo Team is a title as ambitious as it is interesting, which however seemed to us a wasted opportunity, both for the unconvincing plot and for a graphic sector not at all in step with modern standards. The control system is certainly the flagship of the production that allows you to aim precisely with both the Joystick and the Aim Controller, allowing us to point the enemy as if we were really on the battlefield. Bravo Team certainly enters the list of the most interesting titles for PlayStation VR, but we would certainly have expected more, both from a graphic and plot point of view, which in some ways are the only big flaws of the game.
