Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Butterfly of the Moon

    Dark Souls Warriors! We imagine you as you enter the Dark Root Garden surpassing that shady figure of the Titanite Demon, perhaps after defeating the Gargoyles of the previous guide. If you've talked to Andre from Astora and been paying attention, you've heard that deep in the forest there should be a Divine Ember, with which to forge divine weapons. Sooner or later you'll have to retrieve it, especially when you decide to take on the Catacombs near the Fire Sanctuary. And so you juggle the Demonic Foliage (living shrubs) and arrive in front of a closed door. It takes 20.000 souls to purchase Artorias' Cimmerian from Andre, but the ember is not on that side. While you're at it, give it a little blow with your gun or roll against the wall to the left of the door: it's an invisible wall and behind it is a bonfire.

    Take the other way through the forest, paying attention to the trap to the right of the fog that appears in front of you. Get over the fog, it's not (yet) a boss. The forest continues in a large area with enchanted knights, or rather guardians, covered by moss and time. These will revive if you get too close - they're not very dangerous when taken individually, but they use a miracle that slows you down, which translates to: it's easier to get hit by their greatsword. Move a little further away when they prepare the ground for their version of "Tranquil Walk of Peace" (miracle that you can use too, once you find it in the Catacombs).

    A construction perched in the north-east of this area marks its end, and with it a optional boss who shares his OST with another much more "famous" character in the Dark Souls lore: the Butterfly of the Moon, protagonist of this guide to the bosses of the FromSoftware title. If you are a keen observer, you have already noticed the graceful creature perched high on the tower, but do not despair: to see it in all its splendor just go up the stairs and, after the fog in a few seconds, the time you spend from its bed next to you, you will see it approaching. Not exactly threatening, the Butterfly despite appearances is a nice little guy: it is in fact a magical creature, against which a standard character is often unprepared; there battle also takes place on a long and narrow bridge, this means that you can only move in two directions. In short, La Farfalla plays at home. For some reason she feels threatened by you and decides to defend herself. Instinctive reaction, of course, but this specimen with a vaguely feminine face has a more than valid reason to be suspicious, and comes from its past.

    Hint: if you want some help, as soon as you enter the ruined building under the stairs if you are in human form you can summon the Witch Beatrice, which is well understood by magic.

    Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Butterfly of the Moon

    The Moon Butterfly does completely magical damage, then stuff yourself with the best magical defense you have available. A small shield with a good magical defense could help you, at least to learn the creature's attacks, which it will execute while flying without you being able to hit it. After a series of attacks, to be dodged promptly, the butterfly will get tired and will land - naively - on the deck, welcoming our hardest attacks, perhaps holding the two-handed weapon for maximum damage. Anyway flying, bow… makes sense, doesn't it? Obviously if you are a wizard you can rely on your spells but, in order to bother Captain Obvious, the Butterfly has a good defense against magic (always if his opponent is not called Beatrice). Weak to fire.

    Let's review the attacks:

    • Magic darts: Attack that can surprise, sees the boss throwing a series of magical darts throughout the arena, more or less difficult to avoid depending on where you are, which direction they take, etc. Dodge or raise the best shield against the magic you found.
    • Magic spheres: Slower but more powerful magic attack. The spheres are homing, that is, they follow you, and are to be dodged with a somersault. The Butterfly of the Moon tends to alternate these two main attacks.
    • Magical explosion: Butterfly "troll" attack, with devastating damage: when it rests on the bridge to rest, after being bludgeoned a bit, it will begin to charge and then release energy in the form of an explosion. As soon as you see that it charges, go as far as you can.
    • Magic ray: Could a magical butterfly not have a magical ray? The boss will use this move when brought to 50% health. Hard to block and easier to dodge by going through it using the invincibility frames donated by the somersault, it covers most of the deck.

    Drop:

    • Butterfly Soul of the Moon (which you can combine, once you get to Anor Londo, with a +10 spear to create the Moon Butterfly Spear or with a +10 shield to create the Crystal Ring Shield, both magical weapons);
    • 10.000 souls;
    • x1 Humanity.

    Defeat the Butterfly of the Moon and climbing the tower on the right, you will find a crouched blacksmith who holds the Divine Ember, as well as the Key to the Tower's Underground and a Bone of Return. The key opens the door to a tower in the lower part of the Dark Root Garden, where the archenemy of the dragons, Havel the Rock, is locked up.

    We read the Soul of the Moon Butterfly: "The Soul of the Butterfly is a creation of Seath the Scaleless". Here, this is the only certain thing that is known about this creature: it is a magical being created by the albino dragon, Seath, in his quest which led him to madness. Seath, who is closely connected with witchcraft to the point of being considered its father, had no qualms about carrying out experiments. To confirm this link, in the Crystal Caves, after passing the Archives of the Duke, home of Seath, it will be possible to find other Butterflies of the Moon identical to the one just shot down: they will not attack if not provoked, but their presence proves that they are a creation, an experiment by Seath, and as such the scaleless dragon certainly needed "raw materials" ...

    Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Butterfly of the Moon

    The graceful creature has moved away from the group and flew away, gliding to the Dark Root Garden, where once stood an enchanted city now eroded by time, where it decided to settle. Twisted experiment of a scaleless dragon, the teal butterfly was most likely a woman in her prime, which Seath seized prematurely against his will and transformed into a winged being whose four magnificent expanses are a symbol of the nature of eternal constriction. So graceful in her unexpected flight that it makes no sound, not even that of the tears from the faceless eyes.
