And have a laugh, maybe tonight you will fall asleep in the arms of Morpheus and wake up tomorrow in those of Hades.

Grim Reaper

If that's not what the guys from the talented indie team thought Zoink, certainly we lacked. After turning with Fe the development team reverses going to be influenced again by the trend of the famous Stick it to the Man, creating a little gem: Flipping Death. Will the dark lady be just as you paint her?

Flipping Death - Review

Penny, a long-limbed and exuberant girl, has no problem working in a funeral home, nor is she ashamed to put enthusiasm and even humor into what she does. Unfortunately, the people around her don't seem to particularly appreciate her love for noir and gothic, and among these there is also her current employer who, for fear of making a bad impression, has no qualms about firing her.

Of course, for a free spirit like Penny, a small setback like this is certainly neither a problem nor a reason to be put down in morale, on the contrary: it gives her the opportunity to have some unexpected free time to walk with the own boyfriend in the moonlight ... in a cemetery.

Right between tombstones and the dead, Penny decides to make fun of her love by slipping into a mausoleum that, fate wills, yields under her feet, killing her and taking her soul to the kingdom of the dead.

As we become familiar with the new world through the stages of denial, problem, and anger, Penny finds herself chatting with Death himself, who in turn mistakes the very nice protagonist for her replacement. Suddenly we find ourselves in the bony clothes of the "sad" reaper and, armed with his scythe, we will have to solve the problems of the souls who have recently passed away.

Interesting and suitable premises for a success story: to support these solid foundations we also find an exceptional graphic sector in its timburton-like comic style, reminiscent of Tim's first experiments with the stop-motion technique.

Flipping Death - Review

Let's clarify the concept: the videogame experience of Flipping Death is not made in stop-motion and is clearly the work of a divinely made computer graphics, but the feeling you get in front of the semi-static animations of the characters and the emotion that this The work transmits are very similar to when you first see "The Corpse Bride" or "Nightmare Before Christmas".

They are not looking for perfect fluidity or realism led to excess, in Flipping Death the goal is to entertain and excite with a simple, almost childish style. And in this the guys from Zoink hit the target in full!

The gameplay also gives Flipping Death some interesting premises: mainly we will find only the possibility of moving, jumping, interacting or throwing the scythe. The latter, however, turns out to be much more than a simple tool of the trade: thanks to it it is possible to teleport us over short distances, reap wandering souls and possess the living.

Flipping Death - Review

To do this, from the kingdom of the afterlife we will have to correspond to a living and sacrifice a minimum of wandering souls for the possession to take effect: at this point, thanks to a scenographic Flip we will find ourselves in the world of the living and in the body of the possessed.

This flip and possession mechanic will allow us to peer into the mind of the possessed (the dialogues are aimed at explaining what to do and / or unlocking these alternatives) and to use his body as we please to carry out the tasks entrusted to us by the dead.

In fact, if you think that death frees us from all torment, you are very wrong: every soul encountered in the kingdom of the dead has unfinished business, and guess who will have to solve these questions? That's right: just you and your virtual avatar.

The modus operandi of our heroine in facing the puzzles that we will encounter along the way is also extremely pleasant. If you think of solving everything with logic, in fact, you are very wrong: no one in their right mind would intuitively think of using the long tongue of a slimy opportunist as a brush to paint the boat of a sailor killed by his beauty for having his boat with the name of “L'amante”.

This of course is just one of the examples of an alternative solution to the riddle that Flipping Death proposes, but the madness remains a constant throughout the duration of the title which, incidentally, can be finished in 5 or 6 hours at the most.

So far so good: the game conquers and the plot holds up well, helped above all by a vein of black humor that dominates without ever being excessive. Unfortunately, however, in playing Flipping Death we ran into some flaws that significantly penalize a title that could offer much more. First of all, the controls are often inaccurate and seem almost made with the aim of making the adventure frustrating or longer. The scythe for example can be thrown and we can teleport wherever it is stuck. Unfortunately, both launch and teleportation are imprecise and seem dominated by too unrealistic physics.

Flipping Death - Review

We find the same problem with physics during possessions: as if to accentuate the sense of being in a foreign body, each individual who lends us his body will be difficult to command and imprecise in his movements, going in the long run to undermine the experience. of game. We also ran into a couple of situations where our heroine found herself stuck with no way out, forcing us to forcefully restart the game.

Too bad, because it took very little to raise a title with great premises, which still remains eccentric and nice in its themes and in the way of representing them: after all, we must never take life too seriously, we will never get out of it alive.

Flipping Death is the latest effort by the Zoink team, released for Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The plot holds up well for the duration of the adventure and manages to entertain thanks to surreal dialogues and an excellent black humor that is always funny but never excessive. Unfortunately the work is penalized by an imprecise gameplay especially from the aspect of physics, but luckily overall it turns out to be a fresh and ideal gaming experience to kill… time.
