Kingdom Come: Deliverance - Review

Review for Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 13/02/2018

Four years have passed since the developers launched their project on Kickstarter, hoping to receive the necessary funds to complete the game. Over 35 thousand investors helped the development, donating more than a million dollars to this team that after four years is finally ready to release Kingdom Come: Deliverance to the public.

The result is a extremely realistic role-playing game, which is able to satisfy the most demanding players both from a gameplay and a graphic point of view. Kingdom Come: Deliverance, in fact, runs on the infamous CryENGINE, an extremely flexible graphics engine that at the same time manages to bring even high-end PCs to their knees.

Fascinating historical context

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is set in a very interesting historical context, whose events are concentrated in Bohemia in the year 1403. Our adventure has begun, we're going to play Henry, son of a blacksmith from the town of Skalitz, famous for its flourishing silver mines, which was under Sir Radzig Kobyla, a man loyal to the king of Bohemia Wenceslas IV. The latter after losing the throne, in 1400, in favor of his half-brother Sigismund, in 1402 he was locked up in the Prague castle and then transferred to Vienna, under the protection of the Dukes of Austria. In 1403, Wenceslaus managed to escape from Vienna and returned to Bohemia where his supporters restored him to the throne.

As described in our editorial, the disputes between Wenceslaus IV and Sigismund continued for a long time, causing wars and civil revolts, with the subsequent development of the Hussite movement. Among the various attacks there is one excellently told in the game, which is the one that Sigismund ordered to general Markvart von Auliz, who led an army of Cumans against Bohemia, causing terror in the citizens and also in our protagonist Henry.

The game has a duration of about 30 hours, but with the secondary quests the developers ensure at least 100 hours of play, we have also been reassured on the arrival of the new Acts that will further integrate the game. Our test was mainly based on the main campaign even if we never forgot the many secondary quests that seemed very varied and pleasant to complete. The latter have proved to be very useful for breaking the thread of the plot by carrying out other, more or less legal, tasks.

Henry: blacksmith and soldier

The team ultimately decided not to introduce character creation (initially considered) as happens in the most canonical RPGs, but opted for a unique character, Henry, who is still appreciated from the first minutes of the game. Henry, the son of a blacksmith in the city, practices every day to become a worthy heir of his father in the magnificent city of Skalitz, in fact the first tasks to be performed will be commissioned by his father with extreme urgency, given the need for forge a sword for Radzig Kobyla, Lord of Skalitz.

Henry will be able, as typical of the RPG genre, to do practically what he wants, it will in fact be possible breaking into trunks, pickpocketing people and killing ordinary people, or help the inhabitants of the cities, give money to people in need and serve the King unconditionally. All actions that obviously they will affect Henry's fame and reputation, in fact in case of bad fame he could be forbidden to enter a city garrisoned by soldiers or otherwise he could lead us to be loved throughout the kingdom.

To survive in such a hostile environment, however, it will be necessary to equip yourself properly and in Kingdom Come: Deliverance this is elevated to a higher level. They are present well fourteen equipment slots that will allow you to equip the various pieces of armor and various accessories from which you will receive bonuses that will enrich your general statistics. You can then carry a weapon in your right hand and an object in your left, such as a flashlight, with you to move more safely during the night. However, you must always be careful about the items you equip, in fact them they will tend to get damaged over time and will need repairs while stolen items could be confiscated from you during checks of a guard at the entrance / exit of a large city

Complex but functional Combat System

Usually, the feature that distinguishes a good role-playing game from a mediocre one is the Combat System, which is sometimes banal, obvious and not very stimulating, but this is not the case. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance the Combat System has been studied ad hoc to convey to the player the feeling that every fight can be deadly if faced in the wrong way, it will therefore be necessary to learn the basics as soon as possible, so as to be able to face even the most difficult situations.

The attacks that we will have to inflict on our opponent will have to be well studied and addressed in the uncovered points, all made possible thanks to the change of position operable by simply moving the analog stick. Each action is then regulated by a fundamental parameter, stamina, which decreases with each attack and adds an extra condition to be evaluated during the fights, in fact it will be of vital importance to always keep it at a sufficiently high level, avoiding running out of it, a condition that would lead us to a greater risk of being hit aggressively from the enemy on duty.

In the case of long-range weapons such as the bow, another equally important aspect must be considered, namely the absence of the aiming pointer. It will therefore be necessary to aim "by eye" and also consider the range based on the distance of the subject to be hit, all in a few seconds since Henry will tend to tire during the arc tension, causing undulatory movements that will decrease the accuracy of the shot. The bow can be a great choice during stealth assaults, but it can be a double-edged sword in case of little experience with it, so we recommend that you practice in the various polygons present in the cities before using it in battle.

Graphically excellent but ...

One of the strong points of Kingdom Come: Deliverance is certainly the graphic aspect which offers wonderful views, especially during the day. The team did an exceptional job especially from the point of view of the vegetation, the paths, the cities, and the characters. The animations are also of the highest level, thanks above all to the Motion Capture sessions and simulations carried out with professional fighters that have allowed us to study the typical attacks of the riders and their movements. However, the latter are often woody and disconnected from each other, but if taken individually they are certainly superior to those of many other titles.

The version we tested was the one for PC and we therefore had the opportunity to admire the game at its fullest potential, but at the same time we found some flaws that obviously cannot be ignored. First of all the optimization of resources which did not seem optimal at all, in fact in most cases we found ourselves having an unstable frame rate with variations ranging from ten to twenty fps within the main cities while in the rest of the areas the frame rate tended to remain fixed at 60 fps.

Another problem we encountered lies in the presence of some annoying bugs that sometimes prevent you from continuing in a certain direction or from carrying out a certain task. We are sure these bugs will be fixed, but they can still cause problems that can ruin the game experience. From the point of view of the audio, however, we were very satisfied, especially for those that are the environmental effects, while the dubbing struck us a little less, which is still excellent given the amount of dialogue present in the game but which sometimes lacks , especially for the discrepancy between the style of the character and the voice that is assigned to him.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - Review

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a great product, which was made thanks to all those who believed in a project as ambitious as it is fascinating. The world created by WarHorse Studios fully reflects the historical context of the Bohemia of 1403 with equipment, clothes, and weapons typical of the historical period that made us immerse in this wonderful world. From the artistic point of view we are faced with a production of the highest level, in fact it is enough to go into a wood to realize the incredible work done and above all the excellent graphic rendering given by the equally excellent CryENGINE. Note of merit for the combat system and for the variety of equipment, as well as for the excellent plot, which together raise this game to a higher level. The negative aspects that plague the production are mainly generic bugs that often ruin the game experience and make some actions very woody, as well as some discrepancies in the dubbing that sometimes presents voices not at all suitable for the person impersonated. However, we are confident in updates that, in addition to improving the gaming experience, will probably integrate the plot with the new Acts.
