Monster Hunter Stories presents a huge amount of monsters obtainable, almost all of those present in the universe of the saga, if we count the subspecies. In this guide, we will explain how to recognize the monster that can emerge from the eggs present in the nests, but also how to recognize any rarity to obtain the best results. We assume that, as you may have noticed, some lairs in the map are covered with a golden layer. Burrows of this type indicate the possibility of finding a rare monster both in species and in skill. First of all, however, here are a couple of images that will be useful for recognizing the monster already from the color and pattern of the egg (click on the images to enlarge):
The eggs whose name next to it is generic for a species, for example “Bird Wyvern”, indicates that the monster that will emerge from the egg will belong to that species, even if it is not possible to predict what it will actually be. In the case of a “Bird Wyvern” egg we can therefore find a Gendrome, a Velocidrome, an Iodrome and so on.
Please note: remember that if you want to know which family the monsters fall into, just consult the monster pedia in the menu, assuming you have defeated the monster you are looking for at least once in the game.
Another important factor in getting the perfect monster of the species you are looking for is "rarity". When you hatch an egg and the monster comes out, you may have noticed that the background can have different colors. Usually, the background in the egg hatch scene is blue, but some cases will be golden. If this happens, it means that the monster in question is a rare specimen of its kind, specifically involving:
- Slightly higher basic parameters than common members of its species
- Possibility of faster growth and advancement
- More slots available for abilities, whether they are acquired normally or inherited via the "inherited genes" mechanic from another monster.

How to "manipulate" the chances of a rare monster coming out? In reality, it's nothing particularly complicated.
When you collect an egg from the monster's nest, your trusty Navirou will inform you about the characteristics of the egg. If your felyne tells you "This egg looks quite heavy“, You are almost completely guaranteed that the monster that will emerge from the egg in question will be a rare specimen. In this case, don't collect any more and return to the stables.
Note: It is possible to analyze a total of 4-5 eggs per nest, but know that those you discard will no longer be able to recover and, in the worst case scenario, you will have to settle for the last egg available. Be very careful before unwrapping an egg, or you may be even more disappointed with the subsequent results.
When you return to the stables, you will be able to view your eggs before hatching them, and among the information available there will also be the weight of the egg. However, we have confirmed that monsters from rare lairs can be special specimens even if the egg weight is light, so you may sometimes get some pleasant surprises.

Finally, as for finding the lairs of rare monsters, you just need to rely on a Rathian and a little patience. The Rathian is a monstie who darted around the map quickly enough, and she possesses the “Nest Search” ability. While riding the queen of the Wyverns far and wide, press the "B" button to make the nests present in the visual range appear in the lower screen map. If the burrows turn out to be normal, use the kiosk of the catwalk to exit the area and then re-enter. Luckily, the lairs of rare monsters do not have a low percentage of appearance and with a little patience you will be able to have rare specimens in no time.
