Pokémon Go - How to Defeat Jessie and James

As you may have noticed from December 14th Jessie and James have returned to show themselves in Pokémon GO to assign us a special quest at the end of which we are rewarded with a Shiny Celebi. In addition to this, the iconic duo will come forward from time to time to challenge you in battle.

Jessie and James can only be fought if they show up aboard their Meowth-shaped balloon. They are perhaps slightly more challenging than normal recruits, but certainly easier to defeat than the leaders of Team GO Rocket, as they do not use shields. However, you may have some problems taking them down, so here are our tips to get the better of them.

    JESSIE: Scyter, Ekans, Stantler

If you have a good Rhyperior (one of the most useful pokémon in Pokémon Go) with Knock Down and Too Strong it might be enough to take out Jessie's entire team by yourself. Just hit Scyter with Knockdown, accumulating energy for the charged attack that will be able to decimate the energy of the following pokémon. Alternatively also Golem (normal or Alola) with Sassata will be more than efficient, perhaps with Forzantica and Terremoto; or even Aggron or Tyranitar with Downing.

Ekans shouldn't bother you, but if you can't count on Rhyperior or Golem, field a Pokémon with Mud Slap like Excadrill, Gorluk, Dugtrio or Mamoswine.

Stantler might give you some trouble if you don't have any loaded bindings available. The only difficulty it poses, in that case, is that you may have a version that uses Zen Clash as a quick attack, quickly draining the energy of your Fighting pokémon. You will therefore need to oppose Stantler with a pokémon of a type that is resistant to Psychic attacks but ideally has Fighting-type attacks (fast or charged), such as Rhyperior, Golurk, Ursaring, Donphan, Heracross, Wobbuffet etc.

    JAMES: Pinsir, Koffing, Grimer

Even against James having a Rhyperior will make life a lot easier for all three opponents. Even your strongest Fire-type pokémon, such as Charizard, Moltres, Heatran, Blaziken, Magmortar or Flareon with Fire Spin, is fine to get rid of Pinsir.

Koffing is definitely the least of your problems, as he will suffer neutral damage with any Charged Attacks you throw at him. Alternatively you can field a pokémon with Earth attacks like Ekans.

Grimer shouldn't be a problem if you've passed the first two. Once on the field, launch a charged Ground-type attack and you've practically won. Alternatively, the land-type pokémon already listed above still apply.
