One of the best aspects of the 3D sandbox RPG di Keen games, as already found in other versions of the game, is its completeness: Portal Knights mixes all the present aspects in a harmonious and never boring way and can give a very positive experience to all lovers of the genre. The completeness is made even more pleasant by some improvements made in the Nintendo Switch version, first of all that of the menu that allows us to travel from one island to another or to manage the statistics of the character and the inventory, significantly improved especially if we are playing in portable mode: in fact, thanks to the console's touch screen technology, management is really simple.

The customization of the avatar, classic of an RPG, does not immediately present a great variety of choices in terms of appearance; what is really noteworthy is the world that opens up in front of us once we have chosen the class among the three available (magician, archer and warrior): each of these specializations has a different variety of talents and equipment, which radically changes the game of each player, making the gameplay even more different depending on the type of weapon used by the character, given that each class has three different types of weapons to choose from, with different effects on the combat system.

Il Portal Knights combat system it's incredibly simple, but terribly fun and never boring: one button to hit (ZR) and one to dodge (A), the movement is entrusted to the left analog stick, while the right will be used to direct the camera; the ZL key which will be useful only in this phase: it is in fact assigned the task of blocking the camera on the enemy and changing target as needed.

The crafting, at the base of every 3D sandbox title, makes itself felt heavily in the title of Keen Games: in fact, we will find ourselves in front of a multiplicity of worlds that will allow us to collect hundreds of materials which, in turn, are used to manufacture a unknown number of objects and blocks useful in the classic 3D construction of the genre.

In addition to dedicating ourselves to the creation of structures we will have to explore - and not a little - the various worlds, always different from each other and full of hidden or underground areas, towers and mountains full of rare objects, chests and materials. It will not be easy: there will always be a negligible number of enemies trying to stop us, each with different characteristics and strengths and weaknesses, to which we will have to adapt in order not to make the fight too harrowing and having to start the exploration all over again. , in fact, each flying island of Portal Knights has only one respawn point, not always close to our point of interest.

The game is fun in single player and it is even more fun in Cooperative mode, available both online and locally; the latter, however, has a flaw: two joycons are required for each player who wants to join the session (maximum four).
