The nostalgia operation kicks off thanks to WipEout Omega Collection, a collection dedicated to WipEout, Playstation's iconic game, who will shoulder Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy out on 30 June, carrying on Playstation 4 titles that many youngsters haven't tried yet, and that many veterans can't wait to replay.
The collection includes WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury e WipEout 2048 released on PlayStation Vita, three titles that will finally arrive on PlayStation 4 with a stable frame rate at 60 fps and with the full support for PlayStation 4 Pro.
At full speed!
WipEout is one of those titles that has always made you feel extreme sensations, especially from the point of view of adrenaline, in fact the scenes have always been fast and frenetic. Obviously in this version there will be such a mix, which has been emphasized by the extremely accurate graphics and very convincing special effects. The graphics sector is not the only novelty of this edition: there will in fact be one online mode, interestingly implemented in the game, in addition to the local multiplayer mode through the Split Screen which was initially absent on WipEout 2048, which will ensure hours of fun with friends right from your living room. You can choose whether to set the screen vertically or horizontally, to suit the tastes of each player.
The game, being a collection of three titles, distinguishes them quite clearly: in fact, in the “campaign” mode you will find three choices, which correspond to the three different titles. Same thing for the other game modes, because selecting the item "RaceBox" you can start a fast race, choosing between WipEout HD, WipEout HD Fury and WipEout 2048, then choose the type of race, the players and the map.
Destroy your opponents
In WipEout, for the uninitiated, there are no simple speed or time races, but there are also some particularly fun and interesting modes such as:
- Detonator: In this mode you will have to destroy all the mines on the track, manually reloading the ammunition with the circle button. You will need to get the best possible score before your vehicle is destroyed
- elimination: This will be a race that will test your reflexes. In fact, you will have to compete against opponents, collecting weapons that you will need to destroy them, to get points that will lead you to victory. Among the weapons we find many alternatives, such as rockets, mines, lasers and so on.
- Zone: Here you will be racing alone, and you will have the goal of collecting the most points before your car goes to pieces. The race will be divided into zones, where the speed of the car will progressively increase, making maneuvers more and more difficult.
The work done by the developers is really great, since the effects of the explosions and in general the environment are really well taken care of, and contribute to creating a pleasant atmosphere during the most hectic games such as Elimination. However, we did not find the presentation of the races very interesting. At the beginning there will be no explanation to direct us, and even if we honestly did not feel the need since everything turns out to be quite intuitive, it would have been an addition that many would have appreciated, especially to enrich the gameplay.
Vehicles and classes
In WipEout there will be the possibility to choose between many vehicles, which will be more or less useful depending on the type of race we are going to face. Some will grant faster speed, but less health; others will be more maneuverable, and so on. The cars available will initially be limited, and as you progress through the game, many others will be unlocked, also belonging to different speed classes. They are in fact present, as many will know, different speed classes, which in the campaign mode will be unlocked by winning tournaments, starting from the "slowest" up to the "fastest".
In WipEout 2048 the classes will be divided into:
- Class C
- class B
- Class A
- Class A +
For WipEout HD and Fury instead:
- Venom
- Flash
- rapier
- Phantom
The vehicles will then be divided by class and depending on the race you are going to face, you can only access it with the vehicle belonging to the class of that event. This will make things more difficult as you progress through the races. You can obviously do some test challenges with the top class cars to experience the thrill of speed, but greatly increase the risk of accidents every five meters.
Will he be able to convince everyone?
The developers have done a great job, especially from the graphic point of view, bringing to light the titles loved by many fans, who will surely appreciate the work done, enjoying every race. As for the rest of the public, the matter is different: the game offers a very different style from the one it is now, there is no story, but there will only be races to do, which may not convince many immediately .
However we can assure you that this is not the case at all, in fact the adrenaline and the fun that this game is able to give you will rarely find it in other titles, which will obviously have their merits in other areas. For the modest sum of 39,99 euros, you will take home three titles that have made history and that deserve to be played, especially after this great change from a graphic and technical point of view.
WipEout Omega Collection represents a return to the past with all the trimmings, which will allow everyone to be able to enjoy the titles that have made the series famous. Technically the game is perfect, we have not found any particular problems, the game is in fact fluid on the PlayStation 4 Pro, without any visible drop in frames. The style of WipEOut remains that way. Those who are not used to this type of games may soon get bored, but we believe that there are few who would not be able to fully appreciate this title given the fun it can bring after the first races. We were a bit embittered by the campaign, as it hasn't undergone major upheavals, but a more engaging setting would have been much nicer to bring the new generations closer. However, the choice to keep this style is more than justified.
