Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered - Review

Rogue, for those who don't know yet, is a game originally released in 2014. Direct sequel to the great Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag which shamelessly follows the mechanics, Rogue was only released for Playstation 3 e Xbox 360, almost as if it wanted to be a sort of "compensation" for those players who were unable to play at the time Unity, released almost simultaneously but intended exclusively for the upper consoles of the current generation.

In Rogue we play the role of Shay Cormac, a young assassin from the American brotherhood of Achille Davenport.

Shay, although he proves to be an excellent element when it comes to mastering the various techniques of assassination, however, does not seem to have the granite certainty in the Creed like his various mentors and brotherly friend Liam. In fact, after taking part in a mission that ended very, very badly, the young Shay questions his own belonging to the brotherhood of the Assassins, even reaching the extreme consequences: betrayal and siding with the "dark side": the Templars !

This plot focuses on an interesting but undeveloped story at its best that remains centered on the search for Truth, redemption and everything you can expect from the Assassin's Creed saga since Altair's time. All this, however, in Assassin's Creed Rogue Remaster is seasoned with boarding, naval battles and white weapon duels on the rigging of imposing sailing ships.

In fact, as already mentioned before, Rogue has the exact same structure and gameplay type as its Black Flag predecessor. Only the setting changes, moving it from the Caribbean islands to North America, with three vast maps to explore freely: the North Atlantic, the Hudson Valley and the city of New York. The first two are purely naval, but with many landing points and places of interest, while the last is exclusively terrestrial and offers us a very faithful reconstruction of the time of what would later become "The Big Apple".

Assassin's Creed Rogue, in terms of plot and side missions, goes smoothly and smoothly, perhaps even a little too much. The story, although very interesting (seeing the various events through the eyes of a Templar makes the entire lore of the series better understood) lacks bite and the necessary twists, those that make you literally devour the game and that have always have distinguished this playful universe.

Technically we are facing a really well done remastered: the graphics and the sound have been optimized very well for the consoles of this generation but, especially after trying the last chapter of the series, Origins, there is a strong feeling of being in an old game (which is what this is all about).

The game mechanics (as much as you personally adore the “naval” chapters, Ed) and, above all, the polygonal models remain those of the last generation: as much as they are drawn to shine, the years feel right.

That said, it is not that Rogue is a bad game, it will surely please those who have followed the saga from the beginning or who have loved the style of Black Flag (which however remains clearly a notch above in all respects), but I do not think it succeeds. to fully satisfy those who are appreciating, rightly, the new mechanics introduced by Bayek and companions. To be taken only for the sake of completeness.
