Surprise: that Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout was a particular project, one could perhaps have guessed from its genesis.

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout - Review

The declarations of a creative rebirth of the series perpetuated by Gust through the press, the (slightly) veiled hopes of churning out a sleeping hit by Koei Tecmo, the sentiment of the fan of the saga, of the Foscolian little boy who smelled the scent of prey from afar large, all represented elements that, shortly thereafter, would begin to raise expectations and make it clear how, absolutely yes, Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret Hideout were something else, cool like an icicle in the middle of summer and delicate like an anemone.

The dreamy soul of the child therefore approaches DualShock 4, aware that, of course, the gameplay of Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout can finally cheer its spirit. The title takes the tender baby by the hand who, slowly, begins to enter the increasingly complex mechanisms of a life that, like that proposed by Gust's production, does not fail to be bastard enough, always full of surprises and sunny beaches from which to retain every single ray of natural light.

It is a new beginning for the series, which began in 1997 with the sole objective of framing a complex and satisfying playful structure, as well as the beginning of a new narrative arc. You get the feeling of having in your hands not a rough pearl, but a refined precious stone, right from the start, giving the curious gamer a very valid work both in terms of content and artistically, although the superfine levels shown by the players are never reached. giants like that.

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout - Review

Far from pushing the PlayStation 4 hardware to unexplored qualitative heights (after all, the engine that renders the action on video has remained practically unchanged compared to what has been integrated in the recent past of the saga), Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout satisfies however the retinas of the bewitched bystander, impressing them by proposing enchanted landscapes without interruption.

Whether we analyze the glimpses in which nature is the master, rather than the more civilized environments, the expression of enjoyment remains constantly stamped on the playful user, a feeling also reinforced by the good character design of the protagonists of this epic, from the trait definitely more mature than the usual watercolors to which the whole series has become accustomed.

And if it's nice to scratch your retinas on the protagonist's persuasive curves, so too it will be intriguing to hold the controller to give orders during the fight.

As in this case, the tasty constitution of a system that represents the (almost) perfect synthesis between a real-time system with one in turn elevates production to peaks never even touched by any Atelier of the past. The average level of difficulty well calibrated he then succeeds in the difficult task of making even the apparently most innocent battles at least playful relevant.

The progression of the characters, punctuated by the canonical level ups, is also expanded by the possibility of upgrading the skill trees of each of the protagonists, paving the way for interesting tactical experiments. Furthermore, as per tradition, the creation of weapons and items amplifies the choices that can be performed by the curious gamer, completing a package that ultimately captivates and conquers.

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout - Review

It is difficult not to howl with joy in front of such a production. Warped with the most beautiful of the plots available at the eye of Gust's needle, Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout is a special game, dedicated to all fans of the series and, more generally, to fans of good video games. Artistically delightful and playfully convoluted enough, the work by Koei Tecmo deserves to be taken seriously. The most beautiful kiss, you know, is the unexpected one.
