Cat Quest - Review

Review for Cat Quest. Game for Android, PlayStation Network, PC, iOS, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, the video game was released on 08/08/2017 The version for Nintendo Switch came out on 10/11/2017 The version for PlayStation 4 came out on 10/11/2017

Cat Quest strangely proposes itself both for the role of "My first RPG" and for that of "The parody of RPGs for fans of the genre". In both cases it works well enough, so much so that it deserves the summer surprise label on Steam, awaiting the launch on consoles by the end of the year. Cat Quest was born as a mobile project, an RPG without exploration and with turn-based combat, developed in Singapore by a tiny team of three people: one focused on art style, one on actual development and, finally, one dedicated to plot writing, quests and characters.

Cat Quest - Review

The Gentlebros (this is the name of the hitherto unknown studio) started from a basic idea: “what does the internet community love most of all?”. The answer was easy: cats! For this reason, the three bold Asian youths started with the idea of creating a big cat protagonist, accompanied by a whole ironic world with a feline theme. From the aforementioned origins as a very limited mobile title, however, the team has slowly raised the bar until today, at the release of Cat Quest on Steam, a real open world real-time RPG in two dimensions.

“To the cat! To the cat! They kidnapped my sister! "

The story of Cat Quest is an excuse to throw ourselves headlong into the colorful game map, curiously designed like a real map, complete with place names printed on the ground. Our protagonist will meet the bad guy on duty Drakoth, who will sink our boat and kidnap his sister (sisters in difficulty who will be the protagonists of many sub quests, who knows why, Editor's note). From there we will have to explore the land of Felingard, survive the - many - enemies encountered and the - many - feline jokes in dialogues with NPCs.

This Persona 4 Teddie-style humor will accompany us throughout the title, which, as mentioned, shows itself as a parody of WRPG with a splash of cat. The citations of works such as Skyrim (the most "battered"), Tomb Raider and others will be wasted, and every name of place, dialogue or object undergoes the treatment "cat", with mixed results. Something is definitely lost in translation - yes, the game is fully localized in very good Spanish, to our pleasant surprise - but a few jokes got us more than a smile. Furthermore, although the many sub-quests have very "classic" and repetitive objectives such as "go there, get rid of the enemies and come back", they manage not to become boring thanks to a good script and characterization: each small town, in fact, has its own series of missions, all connected to each other, capable of giving a certain level of personalization and interest even to very limited tasks.

Cats novice

From a gameplay point of view, Cat Quest is really basic: a real-time action RPG where we will spot the enemies directly on the game map, before facing them or with our melee weapon or with the classic spells (fire, ice, lightning, etc.). There is no real depth of course, but combining the different skills to escape some complex battles, especially after the early stages of the game, remains satisfying. We also enjoyed the simple but effective equipment and loot system: in fact, you can only equip three elements (headgear, armor and weapon), but among the different statistics and upgrades available - finding a duplicate of an object will give an improvement in the stats - the variety to dress up our big cat like we wish you will not fail.

Cat Quest is not a difficult or infinite game, but it still offers a more than satisfying level of challenge and a discrete number of hours to complete. The whole world will be explorable from the first moment, but - as in any Dark Souls - you will be able to come across monsters completely outside our current possibilities and level of experience. Going north (Game of Thrones?) Increases the level of enemies exponentially and will mean certain death. In truth, some parts of the map are inaccessible before having unlocked certain skills, like in any Metroid, so backtracking will prove essential to complete the game 100%.

Cat Quest - Review

Cat Quest, in the review, has more or less confirmed the impressions we had testing it during Comic Con in London a few months ago. The game is nice, colorful and absolutely deserves the - little - money it requires, especially if you love cats. Probably, even in the indie world, there are examples of deeper or more challenging RPGs, but if you want something light and still well done, it could be a good choice to spend a few carefree hours in this hot summer 2017.
