There is a journey that everyone takes only with himself, because it is not that you come close. If we had to describe Celestial with one word this would be travel. And since we are talking about this, it is what we will try to do even now. Like Madeline in her 3000-meter climb inside herself we will try to scale this immense title into words, perhaps even convincing you to embark on this fantastic journey.

1000 Metri: style

What Celeste immediately strikes for is definitely the style: from all points of view the title manages to create an atmosphere of tranquility, harmony and intimacy. The colors are always well mixed, the music always best accompanies the action and the pauses.

The graphics are not far behind: although it is not artistically exciting compared to other competitors, it blends perfectly with the context and with the gameplay. Celeste is in fact a graphically very clean title even in its most agitated phases and where, at least on Playstation 4, even losing a few frames on the road manages to always be readable.

2000 Meters: The level design

Celeste's strong point is definitely not the variety of its mechanics. In addition to running and jumping the possible actions are only two: the climbing and the aerial dash. Despite this, the title manages to be an incredibly varied platformer. This is due to the enormous knowledge that the level designers have shown they have about the structure of the game: each level will be a riot of challenges that will exploit every aspect of the title to the last, even the technical limits and those that could be defined bugs. .

This perfection and incredible variety in levels manages to make a trial and error title - tremendously difficult and where you could die more than a thousand times in one chapter (not an exaggeration) - never frustrating, fulfilling and always inspiring. And if the eight story chapters are not enough to convince you of the quality of Celeste's level design, then the extra levels will add up to the dose: two for each chapter, including an interesting secret 8-bit level that took us 42 minutes away. to 611 lives.

3000 Meters: The History

After the irresistible style and the perfect level design what remains? Does Celeste also have something to tell? The story begins with no explanation whatsoever: we will be catapulted immediately at the beginning of the journey of the protagonist Madeline who wants, for reasons that we will gradually discover, to climb Mount Celeste. An escape trip from a reality to which she cannot, or does not want to, cling anymore. A journey of escape from itself. This however will not please the mountain and it will force the protagonist to face her depression and all the inner monsters formed around his psyche. Only by playing will you discover if Madeline will be enriched or destroyed by this confrontation.

Definitely not an original plot that tastes like you've already seen it, but still manages to surprise. What distinguishes it is the sweetness, harmony and intimacy of the story, which deals with issues such as depression, inner emptiness and inadequacy, caressing them without ever letting them get out of hand, like a feather held in mid-air by a weak current.

Celeste - Review

Celeste is a title that shines from all points of view. In addition to offering fantastic style, extraordinary gameplay and a story with an imported message, this game also enjoys remarkable longevity and a structure that pushes towards completeness. If it were not for a shaky technical side (at least on Playstation 4) we would have no qualms in saying that we are facing a perfect title. Celeste is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Linux and iOS, so you have no excuse not to give it at least a chance.
