Review for Disintegration. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 16/06/2020

You've probably noticed through games like Quantum Break and Dungeon Defenders: Awakened how interesting the idea of a hybrid video game is. The first mentioned is a TPS having as an interlude between one level and another of short episodes such as that of a television series, while the second is a tower defense with simple mechanics typical of an RPG. This time we are talking about an FPS that has been mixed with the typical aspects of a real-time strategy one.

Disintegration is a product developed by V1 Interactive and published by Private Division. It is a game with a single player campaign and several multiplayer game modes. Among the various languages of the title. It was released on June 16, 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC consoles on Steam, the now well-known online digital video game platform. It was made using the free Unreal Engine. Although cross-platform is not yet available, the developers have stated that they want to implement it in all respects in the future.

Disintegration - Review

V1 interactive is the new studio founded by Marcus Letho, co-creator of Halo and SOCOM US Navy SEALs. Its influence in a sense is most noticeable in the game's plot.

Disintegration is set 150 years in the future, a time when society was destroyed due to integration. It is a process by which it is possible to transplant the human brain into a robotic body, created in order to compensate for the lack of availability of earth resources due to global warming. The player plays the steel and bolt-on cloth of Romer, who after finding a way to escape along with other outlaws manages to get on a gravicycle and take command of a rebel squad. Together they fight against Rayonne, an association that through military control and violence wants to force humans to integrate.

The campaign mode is very well taken care of not only in terms of the story that drives everything, but also in the way in which it is managed. The FPS part consists of being able to drive a floating device called a gravicycle while shooting enemies. The RTS side instead includes the use of the team as minions, with their own fighting skills. To make the continuation less tedious, a level-up system is also implemented for Romer and the team.

A big flaw is the shooting feeling provided by Disintegration to the player. Actually, the feeling of shooting is very simple, even if the result is something incredibly scenic and spectacular.

Let's talk now about the graphics sector. Once again the Unreal Engine proves it can create a real feast for the eyes. Light colors are preferred, which create pleasant contrasts between them. Perhaps due to the fact that environments that are too large should not be rendered, there is a huge amount of small details, each of which is made with extreme care and quality.

The cutscenes seem to have been directed by a great director. Each shot of Disintegration before being made has been carefully studied, and also consists of a remarkable photograph.

Disintegration - Review

In addition to being perfectly characterized, each character has an excellent voice actor behind him. Through dubbing they are able to break that barrier due to the fact that the integrated characters do not have a mouth to move. Characteristic to be understood as a choice made from a design point of view and not due to a lack of a capacity for representation. This aspect is further compensated for through fluid animations, which at the same time give a certain sense of physical expressiveness.

The various outlines of the protagonists are also highlighted through the dialogues that you have with them, and through which a certain lore is expressed that slightly expands the main plot without any heaviness. The lore is mostly about the characteristics of life that people had before they were integrated.

In a sense, it could be argued that it does not seem possible to consistently combine the typical features of a strategic game with a product whose nature is primarily that of a first person shooter. Yet, with its dynamic and energetic gameplay, Disintegration succeeds with extreme perfection in winning this venture of creating a hybrid title between two seemingly distant genres.
