Review for Get Even. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 23/06/2017

Bandai Namco it looks like it will leave its mark again this time thanks to Get Even, the new game developed by the guys from The 51 Farm which intrigued many of us for its interesting game mechanics. Thanks to its exceptional plot and evocative settings, we are now certain that Get Even will be able to kidnap you (in a figurative sense of course) leaving you speechless more than once.

Why were you there?

This question will haunt you for the duration of our adventure. Cole Black, the protagonist of the game, he finds himself trapped in his memories thanks to an experimental tool called Pandora, which allows the wearer to enter the mind and delve into the deepest and most hidden memories. The appearance is similar to that of a virtual reality headset, but much more disturbing. Everything we know is explained to us by some messages that are apparently meaningless, and by voice of an alleged "Red" who will accompany us on our journey to discover the truth.

Our first task is to enter an abandoned warehouse, which houses some soldiers to kill thanks to our weapons (we will analyze them later) and thanks to our mobile phone we will be able to reach the goal which is represented by a room with a girl sitting in the center. The girl (Grace), dying, is tied to a bomb which explodes after a few seconds.

From here our adventure starts, which has as its sole objective to find out who killed that girl, but above all: What were we doing in that warehouse?

From the warehouse we will be transferred to an asylum, where ours is adrenalina it will always be at very high levels, in fact the setting is able to create a good level of tension, even if there will be no jump scare or similar that belong to the Horror genre. However, terror will be present in many situations, creating a very interesting feeling of challenge in the player.

In the asylum they will be present many patients with Pandora and often they will ask us to help them escape or they will ask us to carry out some simple operations in exchange for PINs, useful items or they will simply want to kill us. Also interesting is the figure of Puppeteer that you will carry with you in many memories. In fact, you will find many puppets in the rooms or hidden in the corners, which will make you sweat cold many times.

The tools of the trade

Black finds himself stuck in his memories with some really interesting and useful tools that will be essential to use in the best way to solve the plot. As the first object we find the cellular, equipped with:

  • Map
  • UV torch
  • Thermal sensor
  • Scanner

Thanks to the cell phone we can analyze the steps of the mercenaries; thanks to the UV torch we can analyze the presence of people nearby; the thermal sensor, on the other hand, will also be very useful for following the electric cables during the activation of particular generators. The map will show us the various objectives and enemies in the vicinity, while the scanner will be useful for the evidence gathering, which put together will help us put together the various pieces to reconstruct every single memory.

The weapons are also very interesting, in fact in addition to the classics pistols and rifles (silenced and not) there will be a angular rifle with which you can also shoot your left / right. The mechanism is much simpler than you can obviously imagine. The rifle has one slot for the phone that will act as a "camera" for the weapon, then by pressing a button the barrel will bend to the right or to the left, allowing you to shoot from cover without being seen by enemies.

The evidence room

In Get Even memories are fundamental, and as we are initially explained, the Pandora unit is very unstable: at certain times it will therefore be necessary to make many attempts to continue, thus bringing an instability of the memory itself that could result in the loss of every effort by Black. In fact, during the reproduction of memories, it will be possible to collect documents, audio cassettes and evidence that will be placed in a room in which all the evidence collected in every single memory will be present. Missing evidence can be collected by playing the memory again by clicking on the photo at the bottom right of the remembrance wall in question. By completing the memory you will receive a code, which will be useful for unlocking secret doors.

Red will also unlock another room, accessible directly from the evidence room, in which there will be weapons, obtainable only after collecting a minimum number of evidence from each memory. The two rooms will be accessible from Black by clicking on picture depicting a binary code which will appear at certain moments of each memory.

Unexpected and final turns

An interesting component of Get Even is certainly the gameplay, but in our opinion the plot and above all the plot, are the masters this time. In fact, it will very often happen to be in front of gods amazing twists that will leave you speechless. In fact, once the memories of the room are finished, most people imagine the classic skit accompanied by a concluding ending, but no! In fact, there will be a really interesting twist that will also add some new mechanics to the game, and will allow you to delve into the story, discovering many facets that you never expected.

Obviously we cannot tell you much, because every hint is practically a spoiler, but we can assure you that the ending will be like the rest of the story, that is, it will amaze you once again, and that's what convinced us definitively and allowed us to give our judgment on this game that made us feel emotions that few games are able to give.

But the graphics?

From a graphic point of view Get Even does not give exactly the best, the texture in fact they are quite poor compared to the standards we have been used to in recent years. In the various buildings and especially in the asylum we will often find ourselves in areas with very little light where the game manages to create very suggestive and interesting settings that therefore manage to fill the deficit caused by the textures.

The game still remains great when compared to other titles, especially for the game mechanics which have been implemented very well and work without obvious bugs. Speaking of Bugs, however, it has happened more than once to get stuck in some external areas without being able to move or to see the game go to block for no apparent reason.

Get Even - Review

Get Even is a small masterpiece that brings with it many innovations both from the point of view of gameplay and narration and we were particularly impressed by it, especially because we did not expect such an interesting title full of twists. Get Even also brings with it an excellent setting that goes perfectly with the type of gameplay offered. In closed spaces, for example, it pushes us to use tools such as the map or the UV torch, without which we would not even be able to move in the penumbra. From a technical point of view, the title is good but loses a lot in the textures that seem almost acceptable in dark areas but which instead are particularly poor in outdoor and illuminated environments. However, in a title like this, from our point of view, the graphics definitely take a back seat given the excellent work done by the developers in terms of gameplay and narration.
