Lego DC Super Villains - Review

Review for LEGO DC Super Villains. Game for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 16/10/2018

The Lego brand is now known for transposing many famous franchises into video games, from Jurassic Park to The Lord of the Rings, from Harry Potter to Star Wars, to finally get to the inevitable Marvel and DC comic universes. After Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, the counterpart devoted to evil and chaos could not be missing, that is Lego DC Super Villains, which this time removes the name of this or that character from the title in order to create a story that is as choral as possible.

From this point of view, however, the result is fluctuating, given that most of the over 170 supervillains just appear briefly on screen and many do not even have the opportunity to interact with the events of the plot, which revolves around that scarce ten of the most noble villains.

Once a new game has started, the player will have to create your (bad) alter ego from an excellent editor, which allows a maniacal level of customization, especially if we consider the “brick” graphic style. Once you have chosen the name and features of the original antagonist, however, the various missions of the plot will allow you to check the other team members as you wish, predetermined in the case of the main campaign, freely selectable (once unlocked) during Free Mode. There is also the local co-op, to experience the adventure in the company of another player and make the experience even more dynamic and enjoyable.

The history of duration of about 10 hours manages to entertain an unsuspectingly wide age range, thanks to the brilliant writing and delightful animations of each character. To the delight of the most loyal fans, the original dubbing boasts historical personalities of the DC brand, already known for their activity in animation works and even for live action transpositions, while the Spanish version reluctantly presents a couple of unfortunate assignments, some uninspired extras and dialogues with too childish timbres and cadences, which could make older players turn up their noses.

Lego DC Super Villains - Review

The gameplay follows the lines of all Lego titles, both in terms of mechanics and difficulty: platform sections alternate with simple fights and small environmental puzzles, to be solved by breaking the structures on the map to recombine the bricks in the form of crazy gadgets, ladders and trampolines or, simply, using the special powers of each supervillain. Most anti-heroes have shared skills, such as climbing or lifting heavy objects, but there is no shortage of unique powers and each character boasts well-kept individual animations that are extremely enjoyable to watch.

Between a single mission of the main campaign and the other, the Lego DC Super Villains player has a way to explore the game map, full of side activities such as timed races and treasure hunts, needed to unlock all those characters not directly related to the story. The level of challenge generally remains very low, but still manages to entertain without boring thanks to the variety of settings and jokes with which the bad guys will comment on their more or less vandal actions.

Lego DC Super Villains - Review

Unique in the Lego DC Super Villains are the Slightly high farming due to the 100% completion of the anti-hero roster and the presence of a few bugs too, also given the linearity of the gameplay offered, able to frame the advancement in an irreparable way unless you restart the game. It is also undeniable how technically and graphically little or no progress has been made compared to past titles and that therefore, in spite of a extremely stable and fluid framerate and a well-kept design of characters and environments, the overall graphic impact still seems to straddle this and the previous videogame generation.

On the other hand, the plot, albeit short and quite predictable, runs smooth as oil and constantly makes the player wish the next colorful and delirious film arrived, thanks to the excellent work of amalgamation between the characters of the DC universe and theclever and never vulgar humor which has always distinguished Lego branded products.

Lego DC Super Villains - Review

Lego DC Super Villains is what Suicide Squad failed to be: a product focused on the collaboration between the nemesis of iconic heroes, technically certainly not the latest and not even innovative in the mechanics, but which presents a simple, sparkling and pleasant story to follow, a full-bodied and well-matched cast and the right duration to entertain without ever boring.
