Mr. Driller DrillLand presented by Bandai Namco is the classic remaster to approach with due caution, in fact we are talking about a game released a long time ago, precisely in 2002 on Nintendo GameCube with the classic format action puzzle game. We are talking about a real classic, full of colorful screens, immediate fun and designs from the past. If you are looking for triple-A graphics, cinematic sequences and hyper sophisticated adaptations, go ahead.

You have a drill, a handful of maps inside an amusement park, six characters (not in search of an author) and only one goal: to dig as deep as possible.

Mr. Driller DrillLand - Review

Hello everyone, this is Hiroshi Suzuki speaking to you!

Mister Flüid, the creator of Drill Land, has opened his amusement park in six diggers who have made the art of deep digging their reason for living. Each of them has particular characteristics according to your player skills: Horinger-Z for example, it is a digging robot that survives one time when a block falls on him and is ideal for beginners, Ataru Hori o Taizou Hori they are fast drillers and suitable for those who know what to do, because their speed further reduces the time to make decisions. If you have trouble completing the levels, Drill Town provides theItem shop to buy bonus items that can help you later in the game.

If, on the other hand, you are a fan of the stories behind the game world and the characters, the DrillLand Library will give you the opportunity to read various interesting contents.

Drilling is my business ...

Bandai Namco offers two levels of difficulty, namely "easy"For those approaching this type of game for the first time and"classic", Or the same level proposed to the players of Mr. Driller DrillLand in the 2002 version. The game world consists of the Drill Land amusement park, basically composed of five main attractions, each of them with its particular world to excavate. In fact, by moving your favorite digger, you will have to gradually complete the different objectives that the five attractions put in front of you, digging deeper and deeper collecting bonuses of various kinds, one above all the air reserve, a fundamental element to avoid making game over. If you are looking for a real storyline, know that there is basically none.

It is a puzzle game, with levels to complete and objects to collect, the gameplay does not skimp on surprises and also a final blow, which we prefer to avoid spoiling you. In addition to the five main attractions, the Dreamin 'Parade allows the characters to sing and march in time to the music, while the World Tour allows you to complete levels by choosing which of the six characters to use according to your taste, while in the other attractions the character will vary according to the attraction itself. If you think it is simple or trivial to extricate yourself between the various levels of the game, know that the speed with which you will have to make decisions and choose one path rather than another, will force you to repeat the levels more than once before reaching completion. You don't need to have a lot of time to play a game, that's enough twenty minutes between one engagement and another, which makes Mr. Driller DrillLand a game perfect to carry around on the go between home and work or during study breaks.

Audio and Graphics

The audio compartment is very funny and nice, for those who love the classic games in Japanese sauce, the interludes sung with nursery rhymes and jingles help to compose the atmosphere typically 80s, complete with dialogues between friendly and immediate characters. The stages of the game in which you dig, however, are dotted with pleasant sound effects that do not disturb at any stage of the game.

As for the graphics, nothing particular to report: the setting of the Luna Park offers very nice designs, the characters in style "wick”Blend perfectly with the“ drilling ”atmosphere and the explosion of music and colors makes for a really well thought out mix. Obviously we cannot expect 4K and the details of a triple A game, but as we all know by now there is a way to have fun in video games even without a breathtaking graphics compartment.

Multiplayer

Mr. Driller DrillLand offers a multiplayer mode in local, in such a way as to be able to have fun with friends to the advantage of the simplicity and immediacy of the game. If the local mode two to four players it may seem anachronistic to you, know that in any case it is a game that is practically twenty years old and that lends itself perfectly to this type of solution.

After choosing your favorite character among the six that the game offers you, you can try your hand at the "battle mode"Or in the"race mode". In the first, you will share the game map to be excavated and whoever finds first wins three medals. In the second, there will be no shared map but players will compete on separate maps and whoever gets to first wins 500 meters of depth. Both modes are really funny and they deserve a few hours of fun with friends.

Giving a judgment that is as objective and free from nostalgic elements as possible to Mr. Driller DrillLand can be difficult. Remembering to have played it on the Nintendo Gamecube or on an arcade cabinet, only to find it on the Switch screen twenty years later, is something really suggestive. The remaster itself is successful, the title maintains the immediacy of fun it had years ago, giving the player the perfect title to fully enjoy the potential of the Nintendo portable console. Completing the various levels and going in search of collectibles is fun and every interlude between study and work is easily filled by playing the role of the professional excavator. The price may be a bit high, as the Nintendo Shop is teeming with puzzle games anyway, but give it a chance and, with the right mindset and approach, you won't regret it.
