    Transcend SSD220Q - Review

Mechanical HDDs are still the go-to choice nowadays for those who need a lot of space to store their data. They manage to offer a lot of space at a low price, but as we all know the speed is not the best. Thanks to the evolution of production technology, many companies are able to offer capacious SSDs at fairly low prices, ideal for those looking for good performance in order to have quick access to their files, for those looking for good performance during the game phases or for those who want to speed up their old PC. Here Transcend comes into play thanks to its new SSDs SSD220Q 2,5 ”with SATA interface and new chips QLC NAND Flash. The company has made this SSD available in three different sizes, 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB. Today we are here to tell you about the 1 TB model.

The Taiwanese company with this SSD aims to conquer all users, professionals and not, who need huge space, but also speed to store their files. With this SSD, Transcend also winks at all those gamers looking for a good memory to save their favorite titles.

Transcend with SSD220Q used chips QLC NAND Flash, thus increasing the density by 33%, in order to have more space at a very low cost.

The company has also introduced a lot of new features, making the drive much more secure, so as not to lose our data, and much longer in time. The first to report is RAID Engine and LDPC Coding, capable of identifying and correcting transfer errors to prevent data corruption. This is extremely useful especially if we want to run a RAID system.

Next we find Wear-leveling: SSD220Q is capable of distributing data evenly across the memory cells to extend the life of our SSD utility.

Garbage Collection instead it is a technology that is able to move existing data and allocate it in the place where we have deleted others, so as to free memory blocks. Very useful in order to have the files in a more orderly way and reduce the access time to them, but if we accidentally delete a file by mistake, we will hardly be able to recover it.

The latest technology introduced is DevSleep: when we do not use the disk, it will turn off automatically, so as to save the battery if we had inserted it inside a notebook, or to reduce the consumption of the desktop.

Transcend SSD220Q uses SATA 6 Gb / s as the interface, reaching excellent speeds: in sequential writing a maximum of 500 MB / s, while in sequential reading 550 MB / s.

As already mentioned, Transcend for this SSD has opted for three cuts: 2TB. 1TB and 512GB. In terms of speed of reading and writing, all three are identical, without any difference.

    Transcend SSD220Q - Review

We have some differences in random read and write, the 2TB model achieves 81,000 IOPs for reading and 80,000 IOPS for writing. The 1TB one reaches 57,000 / 79,000 IOPS, while the 512GB 57,000 / 59,000 IOPS.

During our tests, the operating temperature of the Transcend PCIe SSD220Q settled around 33 °, optimal temperature for each Sata-type SSD. The first benchmark we used to test the Transcend SSD220Q's performance was CrystalDiks Mark, the most used test in the world to verify the performance of any type of disc. Both in reading and writing, with the tests from 1,4,8,32 GB they are in line with what was declared.

The second benchmark used was Anvil's Storage Utilities. Here too we find the same situation seen above: with small files the speeds mirror those declared by Transcend, but as the files begin to increase in size, we have a small decrease in the writing speed, but still satisfactory results remain.

The last benchmark used was ASSD Benchmark. Also in this case with large files we have a slight decrease in writing performance.

    Transcend SSD220Q - Review

Transcend SSD220Q is a 6GB / s Sata SSD with good features. It manages to guarantee excellent performance during daily use and in the game phases. If we have to process small files, it can guarantee exceptional performance, but if we have to deal with fairly generous data in terms of GB, the writing speed will suffer a slight decrease, which will not compromise its use: nothing of in short, transcendental. The operating temperatures are almost excellent, in fact our sample, after several hours of stress, has practically never exceeded the threshold of 33 °.

If you are looking for a Sata SSD capable of offering you good performance, with a large storage and above all that does not cost crazy figures, you can buy Transcend SSD220Q 1TB at a price of about € 113.
