V-Rally 4.

It is enough to read the title to experience a very particular ardor, a jumble of passion mixed with excitement capable of making even the most sexually repressed gamer slip off his panties in the middle of St. Peter's Square, pushing him to mate with the first available orifice. It is sufficient to touch that mythological logo with your eyes and a thousand orgasmic spasms occur, involving the lower abdomen, mindful of that fantastic period twenty years ago, the one in which the polygons could be almost counted on the fingertips and the "it was better when it was worse ”was just a distant thought.

A few moments later, the abrupt impact with reality, the sudden awakening, with sweat on the forehead and the disappointed expression of an experience that can never be repeated. But love conquers all, to put it à la Hamilton, the immeasurable love towards an anthology saga of the steering wheel tries to mess up the plans of a playful disorganized creature, rich in content but qualitatively rather poor. We cry with despair, Scottex in hand and off we go, we launch V-Rally 4 and it is almost reconciliation with the past, a memory for a few seconds of what has been and, unfortunately, will never be again.

The fourth nominal chapter of the legendary series started by Infogrames and Eden Studios takes the form of a war memorial, a monolith raised to remember the decomposition of a vanished youth, a binary streak that decrees the return - more bitter than sweet - of one of the most enamored franchises of the second half of the 90s.

There is still some grain of light, compressed between the gigabytes of this work, but it will not be the faint memory of the sunsets of a very distant summer that will make the sad reality less decadent. The truth is that V-Rally 4 numbs, pad in hand, disorientates, falls silent. The driving feeling is apparently similar to that of the good old days, too bad that the video game has evolved, compared to two decades ago. And one swears instead of enjoying the powerful four-wheel drive cars that tread the heterogeneous places hosting the various competitions, one swears for an often uninspired track design, in which there is little space for the brushstroke in powerslide, stacking semi-anonymous circuits up to form a pile of roads attributable to a single common denominator: frustration.

Anger for what could have been, that is, a course work with an edge over the rest of the crew, capable of awakening the soul of both the serial driver and the more sober of Voghera's housewives. But no: you travel seamlessly from one point to another on the map, selecting the next stage with the need to manage your garage by enriching it with both new, push-button racing cars and people theoretically able to make the difference between victory and defeat.

The guys from Kylotonn Games have introduced a slight managerial nuance that guides the player's hand, forcing him to take care of his entourage, with the ultimate goal of creating a dream team capable of breaking the kidneys of any driver on the globe. . Too bad that, even setting the difficulty to the maximum levels, V-Rally 4 is unable to shake off the effigy of the easiest racing production of 2018. The exaltation is little, the desire to prevail over the even lesser opponent, the final impression is to want to excel in every field, without having the necessary means.

But there is some very marginal enjoyment that awaits those who are not afraid of chipping their teeth by biting a dish now hardened by the passing of years, able to look a billion meters beyond an obstacle, that of poor graphic rendering, potentially fatal for anyone who approaches production thinking about the new messiah. A different feeling than usual, however, which, mixing with nostalgia, cradles the gamer as if in the arms of his mother, waiting for a caress that is unfortunately impossible.

V-Rally 4 is the Waiting for Godot of the ignorant drifting, in short, the bridge over the Messina strait of racing games, weighed down by a doctrine closely intertwined with a past that is now unattainable. There are flashes of evolution, but it is not enough to mix the genes of some great protagonist of the racing scene to obtain a perfect result. What is missing is the courage, the serenity to say that the past has passed and will never come back.
