It was 1726 when Jonathan Swift published the first edition of "Gulliver's Travels", a satirical and adventurous novel that dragged the famous protagonist into hilarious social reflections. Gulliver's voice has echoed over the centuries, so much so that to hear of Jiganti and Lillichini, the reference to Lilliput, land of tiny men about twenty centimeters tall met by our sailor during his first voyage, seems evident.

World of Final Fantasy he does not limit himself to recalling Swift's work only in the names, but also adopts its tones. Although the dangers of the world lurk around every corner, tempting irony and a love of adventure will dominate.

I don't remember who I am, but I will save the world

Reyn and Lann are gods twins afflicted with almost total amnesia (a trick so used that it can now be defined as "hero's amnesia"), who find themselves imprisoned in the routine of a timeless world, until a self-proclaimed divinity intervenes to wake them from their torpor.

The twins were indeed mirage tamers, mighty fighting creatures now strangers to their minds. In no time at all we will find ourselves catapulted into world of Grymoire with the aim of recovering lost memories and capturing every lurking monster.

Gotta catch 'em all

World of Final Fantasy is indeed completely focused on catching mirages, the creatures of Grymoire, which we will use in battle alongside us. Flank means head, since the gameplay provides for the verticality of the party: Reyn and Lenn will form the combat team by stacking the mirages on their heads in order of size, from largest to smallest in the three available slots. Our favorites are also able to change size by transforming themselves into Lillichini, thus offering us the opportunity to form secondary teams with large monsters.

The battles include casual encounters in perfect Jrpg tradition and turn-based combat with the possibility of choosing the waiting mode for the less accustomed to ATB-based combat, the famous action bar that once loaded allows us to act. After the battle, we will earn experience points and skill points, increasing the level of our mirages and evolving them into new "terrifying" incarnations.

The soundtrack is in line with the nostalgia operation set up by Square Enix, going to rearrange and re-propose the melodies of the titles that made the Final Fantasy saga famous. The same maps are the historical scenarios of the various chapters of the saga adapted for the Lillichino world.

A question of porting

World of Final Fantasy lands on PC almost a year later than the console counterpart (reviewed at the time by Epic Videogames Guide), proposing what has already been seen without any changes, presenting the same technical characteristics without infamy and without praise. The only flaw is the awkward configuration of controls imagined for those who use mouse and keyboard, which makes it almost vital to use a pad to ensure the comfort that hours of leveling and capturing require.

World of Final Fantasy - PC Review

That World of Final Fantasy is Square Enix's answer to titles like Pokémon and Yo-Kai Watch is undeniable, but to that is added all the self-proclamation necessary to make the product attractive to longtime fans. Have you ever dreamed of capturing a little cartoon version of Ifrit and training it? Then this is the title for you. If you are looking for a well-structured plot, credible twists and mature characters, stay away from this excellent spin-off.
