If they were to offer you an old-fashioned RPG with comic graphics and a small but compelling story, run away. Because otherwise you will become slaves to such a video game. This is what happened to us with Battle Chasers: Nightwar, a title developed by Airship Syndicate Entertainment and published by THQ.

The first element to strike about this video game is the graphic design with a comic style that not only is not to be disdained but which is so well cared for as to be a real pleasure for the eyes. The writer loves comics but has rarely found a graphic style and an art direction bearable that focuses entirely on a style so particular as to be more like a comic than anything else. Battle Chasers: Nightwar features a colorful graphics compartment, light, light-hearted and its entire structure is what it should be: a pleasant pastime. Although the plot is not the deepest (which is sorry but does not offend us) the developers have worked very well on the character design and design of the whole world where the story unfolds to the point that it is much more enjoyable, as a whole, than to much more noble titles and with software houses with almost unlimited possibilities behind them. The guys at Airship Syndicate Entertainment need only compliments. Are you listening? Just a couple.

The characters that we will be able to control at the beginning will be only two: Gully e Calibretto. The first is a girl daughter of a great leader who has passed away who bequeathed her daughter some mechanical gloves capable of crushing anything. The other is a nature-loving wargolem and a life defender. To our group will be added, later, Garrison, a former bodyguard soldier of Gully's father who swore to defend the girl, Red Monika, a killer and a thief who probably travels with others for a simple matter of profit and finally Knolan, an old wizard all in one piece of immense power but unlikely laziness. There would also be another character but... no spoilers!

YOU can travel through the world of Battle Chasers: Nightwar in three ways. There are movements on the general map of the region in which we find ourselves who are guided: we will not in fact be allowed to go out of roads and paths to explore freely, but we will have to follow pre-established paths. This is a shame but behind it there is the need to let us develop a movement strategy to choose from time to time the enemy that best suits us to face in order to reach a certain place. The second type of movement is the one that takes place in small places on the map where we can fish (a gimmick to make us earn materials and money) or face some enemy to conquer a treasure chest. In this case the rooms will be very small but the care with which they have been made is amazing and each cave will be a pleasure for the eyes. Finally, the third modality is that of classic dungeon. There will be areas where we can dive and from which only winners or dead can emerge. In this case we will be given the possibility to also choose the specific difficulty level for that dungeon in which you are entering. The combat mechanics they are by themselves very simple and sometimes even a bit trivial, but it is still a game for those who want to experience an adventure without suffering the stress of the search for perfection, an element to which many titles have accustomed us.

If there are many objects traceable, recoverable and achievable through a simple crafting system, the same thing cannot be said of the variety of their designs: unfortunately there are a limited number of object models, especially in the case of armor, robes and weapons. Anyhow Battle Chasers: Nightwar also offers us an alchemist bench for the creation of potions and ointments able to improve our performance in battle. In the villages we will also find magicians and antique shops where, for very little money, we will be able to buy objects with enormous potential.

The longevity of this title is decent: we are not facing an infinite RPG but not even a mockery of a few hours. The exploration, the cultivation of s with the characters, the arenas, the dungeons, will demand their price in terms of time spent and, not to be underestimated at all, will reward those who more than others have invested time in discovering all the secrets of this title. Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a title that in its small way gives enormous satisfaction. The only flaw lies in the not very thorough plot and in the always not very thorough characterization of the characters at the level of active and passive skills. In the exploration mode, in fact, we will be able to enjoy the use of some special skills (not available at other times) that we will rarely really need. Apart from the curative one of Calibretto. That of Calibretto is beautiful. Calibretto's is useful. Hzzzzzt.

From Battle Chasers: Nightwar we couldn't expect more. However, the game does not completely disappoint in any of the areas in which it spends: it is balanced, fun, colorful and easy to play if you have a controller. We recommend it to anyone who wants an old-fashioned RPG steeped in comics, moving stories and mysterious enemies.
