After having already covered the first and third chapter of Dragon Quest in the past few weeks, it remains only to discuss Dragon Quest II, to close the circle on this rediscovery of the classic trilogy. However, Dragon Quest II has far less to its arc than the other two titles. This is due to the very nature of the game, which seems more like an intermediate game between the unique experience of the first and the maturity in the mechanics of the third. So let's analyze exactly what Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line can offer.

Dragon Quest II tells the story of a descendant of the legendary hero Erdrick, struggling with the return of darkness, hundreds of years after the events of the third chapter. As for narrative, this second Dragon Quest adds some more modern elements than the first, without however taking the necessary step to be able to offer a real narrative. The hero will have to face some more particular vicissitudes, and will have trusted allies with him, but in broad terms the adventure remains very basic. This puts the game at a disadvantage within the trilogy; sinning in oneness. And along these lines we can describe the whole adventure in general.

Dragon Quest II - Review

The gameplay is enriched by the presence of companions and the possibility of facing multiple monsters, however the enormous limitations given to the characters do not stand out in the best way the combat system. While in the first title the adventure was solitary and the hero had to juggle different spells and weapons,  in Dragon Quest II we will have several characters who, added up, are equivalent to the lone hero of the first adventure. In this way the presence of multiple enemies and characters becomes not so much a strength of the game as much of a possible annoyance, since the battles are not deeper than in Dragon Quest, but simply longer.

In terms of balance, the title is pretty fair. There will be no exaggerated obstacles, which can only be overcome with immense farming, however we have noticed how the level-up system seems much slower than the already not very fast Dragon Quest. Despite this, the adventure runs with few hassles, and knows how to give the immersion and small satisfactions that a JRPG player looks for in the genre. As for the more technical aspects of the game, such as the quality of the remaster or the music, we direct you to the review of the first Dragon Quest, as Dragon Quest II brings with it the same pros and cons of the first title.

Dragon Quest II - Review

Ultimately Dragon Quest II is a title that suffers due to its being the link that links the origins of the series to the first historical title of Dragon Quest, namely the III. It remains an absolutely valid adventure, although with some elements to have to endure due to its seniority, however we recommend it only to fans of the saga, and it would have benefited from being included in the purchase of the other two titles of the trilogy. As a single title, Dragon Quest II is the weakest of the classic trilogy.
