In previous chapters of the Bioware saga, the discovery and research of material on planets had simple mechanics. If now you have found yourself confused here are all the answers on how to scan the planets in Mass Effect Andromeda.
Don't panic: even in the new episode the procedure is simpler than it seems.
Scan the planets
As mentioned before, the scanning of the planets has been simplified compared to the past. There is no longer a need to scan the entire planet, sector by sector for minerals and other materials. Now, Suvi will warn you by letting you know that there is something interesting on certain planets. Just activate the scanner (by pressing L2 on PlayStation 4 and LT on Xbox One) and a ring with an arrow will appear, pointing to the location where you will find the material you are looking for. If the ring does not appear, then there will be nothing of interest on the planet. Consequently, it is always good to observe this detail, before diving into a possibly useless search.
By scanning planets, crafting materials or experience points can usually be found, so it is often worth going for them. When we find what we are looking for, just press R2 on PlayStation 4 and RT on Xbox One to launch a probe and take the loot.
Scan objects
In theory, you won't have to worry about scanning without the game warning you that there is possibly something interesting to look for. Usually this happens when the controller vibrates and the appropriate button will appear on the screen. If the vibration is deactivated, just pay attention to the appearance of the button on the monitor, in the lower left corner.
Research credits can be earned for crafting or upgrading, or by continuing to scan various items. Objects to be scanned usually appear as coated with a dark orange sheen. When this happens, press X on PlayStation 4 or A on Xbox One.
