Ace Attorney is a now historical series from Capcom. Started in 2001 on the Game Boy Advance, it currently has six chapters, in addition to five spin-offs, including the one with Professor Layton. The series also has the merit of having aroused the interest of a part of the Western public towards visual novels, a genre almost unknown in our part before 2006, when the DS port of the first Phoenix Wright debuted in Europe.

In recent years, releases have decreased to the advantage of porting and collections: in particular, the first trilogy (the one born on GBA, but arrived in Europe on DS) was first ported to iOS and Android and then, with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, on 3DS at first, and then also land on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

The contents are the same as the 3DS version of the collection, downloadable from Nintendo eShop since December 2014: the collection includes, in order, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All e Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, with the “new” artwork of the HD Trilogy released on iOS in 2012, the highly discounted Trophies and Objectives and the translations that were made on the occasion of the release of the titles on DS; in this regard, we are sorry to learn that in the future a patch will add translations in French, German, Korean and Chinese, while neglecting our language. On the other hand, a rather narrow niche may be delighted by the inclusion of the Japanese versions of the games.

For the rest, there is no additional content and no substantial gameplay changes, as we shall see. Considering the launch price (€ 29,99 in the various digital stores), it would have been legitimate to expect something more, but we still have three rich games that will easily take away sixty hours in all.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - Review

The new graphics sector divided the audience: while the majority applauded the artworks, which, thanks to their quality and very high resolution, give new life to an ancient trilogy, some believe that part of the "magic" that characterized the GBA and NDS editions; in any case, it is clear that the ancient very low resolution artworks were not feasible in a port intended for current gen consoles (and, if this had been done, we certainly would not have spoken of "magic" ..., Ed), and, at the same time, it should be noted that the new ones are very pleasant and well colored. In our opinion, the new artworks are promoted; moreover, we are ready to bet that on the Switch screen they make a great impression, even if we cannot say it from direct experience, as the version we tested is the one for PlayStation 4.

In any case, readers can get an idea by looking at the trailer recalled at the beginning and the screens that accompany this review.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - Review

In terms of gameplay, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy contains three investigative visual novel, in which they take on the role of Phoenix Wright, a budding young murder attorney. These are not pure visual novels, but hybridized with the adventure genre.

The gameplay consists of two phases: Investigation and Courtroom. The first, of course, consists in the preparatory phase of the trial, in which it is necessary to search the crime scene (and possibly other places as well) and interrogate people who are informed about the facts. The second, on the other hand, corresponds to the trial phase in which the player must dismantle the accusatory system piece by piece against examining the witnesses, looking for logical contradictions or false circumstances denied by the evidence acquired in the previous phase of defensive investigations.

The only novelties we have identified are theincreased save slots to ten per version (Japanese original and translated) and theadding a magnifying glass icon in the phases of patrolling the environments, indeed very useful because it changes color after the corresponding element has been examined, in order to avoid situations in which, in the spasmodic search for a clue, one goes to click a bit everywhere at random and find himself always the same descriptions. On the other hand, theabsence of any text log, that is, a register containing the dialogues already read; in many recent visual novels it has come in handy, so it would have been nice to have at least this addition.Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - Review

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is an excellent opportunity to return to the origins of the Capcom series, but, above all, it is today the most comfortable and effective way to enjoy the three titles. Too bad that this time too there is no translation.
