PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (Game Preview) - Xbox One Review

Review for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 20/12/2017 The version for PlayStation 4 came out on 07/12/2018 The version for Xbox One came out on 04/09/2018

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will probably open a case: advertising a title with the Game Preview label as the most important console exclusive for the Christmas season demonstrates Microsoft's courage - and recklessness -. PUBG Corporation's work, as it has already happened on PC before, often trudges, declining as the probably least optimized binary creature currently available on Xbox One.

The technical sector often borders on embarrassing, revealing pop-in problems and definitely disconcerting texture updates, "corroborated" by decidedly improvable animations, a frame rate that often knocks on the door of twenty frames per second and various glitches (in) graphics probably worthy of the worst 128-bit titles ever released.

Yet in the emerging gameplay of PlayerUnknown's Battleground there is some good: something that, despite all the limitations currently existing, elevates the playthrough to something very electrifying. By proposing a (relatively) original battle royale experience, in fact, the product published by the Windows house comes to touch strings that not even the most popular of the shooters had managed to move until now.

The desire to survive at any cost, trying to annihilate as many enemies as possible, gathering more or less luck weapons, trying to hide, praying to flee to escape death: this race for survival is the quintessence of the game.

Each match is different, both in form and substance, thanks to a different starting point for each match. The gamer is catapulted into the heart of the action, defenestrated by the welcoming sheets of an aircraft, adequately trained to place himself bastardly in a random point of the only (for now) available map, on an island ready to welcome the homo ludens together with all his, pindaric, aspirations for victory.

One against ninety-nine, or in tandem with one or more adventurers, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds embodies all the qualities of the perfect survival battle royale game, injecting the user with adrenaline flowing both in solitary and in company.

However, it is a pity that, in addition to the unconvincing technical sector, the title is currently suffering from a series of problems related to the controls and the game interface, real digital messes worthy of more attention from the development team. The controls, in particular, are not very intuitive and decidedly articulated, poorly optimized for use with the pad.

Furthermore, some elements of the user interface seem to have been created in a hurry and fury. Negative impressions are amplified by a whole series of bugs in the netcode, coming to paint the exemplary picture of a game that, albeit in early access, is vehemently advertised by a publisher with a tremendous need for exclusives at Christmas time.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (Game Preview) - Xbox One Review

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is still in Early Access, of course, however it is difficult not to think about how much this sparacchina work would have deserved to be published on Xbox One in a different form from the current one, also considering the price tag that is not exactly small. Early access is certainly one of the ways chosen by the software houses to monetize and invest in their creature, but the doubt that the release of the game has been accelerated to offer it as a succulent exclusive console remains overwhelming. There is no doubt that the experience will be improved, in the near future, but how long will it take for the undeniable qualities of the gameplay to be accompanied by a technically valid and structurally refined experience and free of programming holes?
