Life is strange at times. There are videogame works capable of forever changing the medium, capable of moving the consciences of millions of people on their own, and then there are the scum games, those that would never have deserved to be codified.

Unruly Heroes - Review

In the midst of these two playful alignments qualitatively poles apart, there are then those titles that, although apparently free from any serious deficiency, just cannot stand up in a market in which it becomes increasingly difficult to gain space. Well, Unruly Heroes belongs to the latter group.

Attractive graphics, a studio, Magic Design Studios, characterized by an illustrious pedigree, inclusive as it is of some excellent minds belonging to the working group responsible for Rayman, good longevity and at least a discrete variety would all seem to be excellent foundations on which to build an unforgettable production, yet the feeling of being in front of a game with an overall value lower than the sum of the individual parts is really overbearing.

About thirty platformic levels should encourage homo ludens to experiment with new and always different challenges, also thanks to a still interesting level design and always ready to experiment variations on the classic collect 'em up theme, along with a story that, although it doesn't really scream a miracle, adds that extra bit of characterization that never hurts.

Too bad it almost seems to lack the soul in this binary creature. Sigh, sob. Something is missing in Unruly Heroes, that magic typical of the most popular platformers that allows the creature of the French team to definitely take flight, finding himself orphaned of that extra something that allows him to say goodbye to the earthly dimension to take a leap that can lead him directly into the Empire of the video game.

What is not lacking, it should be emphasized, is the blasphemy that comes out of the user's mouth at every moment of the hairy gameplay of Unruly Heroes, considering how the general difficulty level is set upwards and that, in general, to aspire to performance worthy of the name you will have to sweat the so-called seven shirts. The controls do not help either, in some circumstances a little too “lewd” and imprecise.

And it is thus that, looking for the perfect crossing between one jump and another, with the curses to follow one another without solution of continuity, the binary work that sees the protagonist four different characters swappable on the fly runs away without too many hormonal upsets, leaving the player a feeling of incompleteness, thinking about what could have been and what never will be.

It should be emphasized, however, that the development team has not really spared itself in terms of effort, considering the introduction of two multiplayer modes, one in cooperative, the other in versus, which although they clearly fail to earn a prestigious place in the annals of gaming, are all in all a good integration. Technically then, the game looks good even if placed next to the most famous productions available on PlayStation 4, proposing an all in all enjoyable artistic direction, supported by a truly brilliant cosmetics. Although it is made entirely using Unreal Engine, Unruly Heroes can boast of a particularly cartoonish graphic design, which does not make us regret the excellent UbiArt Framework.

Sparkling animations lead the way to a damn successful title from the visual side, equipped with an engine capable of combining excellent textures with a clean screen rendering without any inaccuracies. The audio is also impactful, supported by a series of fully recited dialogues of good quality.

If you are looking for a production that knows how to combine good playability, a good longevity as well as a really pleasant artistic direction, you have found bread for your teeth. For all those who are waiting for the new messiah of platformers to be able to tend to purchase, you should postpone: Unruly Heroes is a discreet production, sometimes characterized by excellent ideas, but nothing more.
