Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Hungry Dragon

    In the last Dark Souls boss guide we got rid of the Goat Demon, and with his death we have obtained the Key of the Sewers with which we can open the door further ahead and enter the real Depth, which are none other than the sewers of the Village of the Undead.

    Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Hungry Dragon

    Among cannibal butchers, giant rats and cursing frogs that will populate your nightmares, this labyrinthine place leads to one of the two entrances to the Infamous City, mandatory area to ring an Awakening Bell and start opening the way to the Sen Fortress.

    If you have not chosen the Universal Key as an initial gift (which allows you to circumvent part of the Infamous City with a very different path, with a shortcut) or you have simply happened to enter the Infamous City through its main door (which leads to the high city), you will soon see that it is closed and that you will need one key.

    To get the key, just take a few steps back and take the entrance on the left (turn from the door) or on the right (if you are in the corridor leading to the door) ... but you won't think it's that easy, right? It is clear that the area you overlook is a 'arena, which you can get to via stairs. There is a ritual fog, and like (almost) every fog the boss: the Hungry Dragon.

    Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Hungry Dragon

    The dragon is unlike anything you have faced at the moment. We avoid any reference to the Freudian phrase and, after having taken our jaw off the ground for one of the most inspired and iconic design bosses in recent years, we will understand that we have a gigantic and rather deformed dragon.

    Two small premises: one, if you are in human form, in the area near the fog you can summon two NPCs who will help you with the boss. We advise you not to summon them, as this does nothing but triple the life of the boss, already tall on her own. At most, if you want a distraction (but you don't need it), choose one of the two (Solaire, if he has the constancy to raise his shield). Two, make sure you have killed the Invoker of Seath in the DeepIf you don't, he'll join the party too, buffing the dragon and making you a target you don't want to be.

    That said, the dragon can be intimidating, if only because of its size or size.huge mouth who has taken the place of the chest, but with the right patience is a fairly straightforward boss. As you will have understood from the premise, the Hungry Dragon is a optional boss and also for this - besides the fact that it is still a dragon - that it has a lot of life. His weak point is the small head, so when he chooses to show it, it's your chance to hit him. The Hungry Dragon is destructive, and getting around it to the tail isn't a viable alternative, though the tail can be cut with a few firm strokes (there is also a gift for you, if you can). The key rule is dodge, dodge, dodge. Being a dragon it is weak to electricity: if you have some Golden Resin with you, it's time to use it. The columns are useless, but the arena is very large and gives a lot of room to maneuver.

    Let's see the creature's individual attacks:

    • Lunge: After a roar, the boss will open his "mouth" and crash to the ground. This is a "fishare" attack, that is, to make him do. You have to get out of the range of the move and dodge the blow: the dragon will remain stuck on the ground for a few seconds, exposing its head. Two, three hits at most are enough, but manage your stamina, because if you don't have enough to dodge the hit when it recovers…;
    • Charge: It is perhaps the most devastating attack of the Hungry Dragon, capable of annihilating you in one blow: the boss will make a long charge taking everything with him - including you if you are unlucky. Depending on the distance, it will be more or less easy to avoid this draconic train. Once the charge is over, the boss will stop long enough to be hit. Take advantage of it, but without greed;
    • Jump and crash: The Hungry Dragon cannot fly, but he has found alternative ways to repel threats: followed by the charge or when you are away from him, the boss will jump and hang in the air for a second before falling and trying to crush you. When he jumps you must not lose sight of him: as you will have understood his shots are quite bad;
    • Fury: The boss will get further angry and start pawing the area below him. In general, every attack is "anticipated" by something, a sound or a movement: try not to stay like cod in front of him for too long, that's it;
    • Backlash: Did you think it was his blind spot? Obviously not. The tail flick is rather frustrating; he will do this when you buzz too much behind him and near the tail. Attack that can be dodged or minimized with tail docking. After the clean cut the boss can still hit you, but the damage will be quite ridiculous. That said, the queue is still the lesser evil, so focusing on that isn't a bad strategy;
    • Football: The Dragon can also kick with its paws trying to hit you. Readjust yourself so that this doesn't happen;
    • Jack: The boss can also try to grab you with his hand and take you for a trip to his rib cage. The hold hurts a lot, so it is an attack to avoid first (it makes the "move" to want to catch you) or you are already repeating the boss;
    • Acid: The Hungry Dragon will implement this attack when near death. After writhing, the dragon will spit out a huge amount of acid which will damage your equipment if you end up wallowing in it. Run as hard as you can in the opposite direction until the poisonous sea disappears.

    The Hungry Dragon, with skilful stamina management and patience as a primary weapon, is simple enough, however long a fight it can be. Magic and ranged weapons are a good alternative, but especially the latter won't do much damage to the Dragon.

    Drop:

    • Key to the Infamous City (key used to open the door);
    • 30.000 souls;
    • x1 Twin Humanities;
    • x1 Bone of Return;
    • Ax of the Dragon King (If you cut the Hungry Dragon's tail you will be given this mighty draconic weapon which, at the cost of 50 strength or 34 with two hands, with R2 and the like will release a devastating wave of energy).

    Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Hungry Dragon

    We deliberately addressed the Hungry Dragon badly in the course of the guide: it would actually be better to call it dragoness, as it is a female dragon. It is indeed descendant of the ancient dragons totally corrupted by time and hunger - his chest became a huge maw - which, dragged and settled in the Depths, is truly the mirror of an extinct race. L'greed, a desire that has always been associated with draghi, has twisted the true essence of this legendary animal, and perhaps suppressing it actually means freeing it from the chains that have carried it from the skies to a sewer, twisting its very nature.
