Today comes a news that may seem marginal but it is not: Fall Guys - Ultimate Knockout, the funny title published by Devolver Digital, marks a sales records even on PC. The one-of-a-kind battle royale seems to have come out of practically nothing, with the sole purpose of becoming a huge success (as well as a meme machine!). That the launch could be good, with lots of free downloads on PS4 via PS Plus, in fact one could argue, but beyond 7 million sales on Steam they go beyond any enthusiastic forecast.
Numbers in hand, it seems the launch of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout on PC has grossed an incredible 185 million dollars. To understand each other better, it is the biggest PC achievement in the past four years since the launch of Overwatch. And it doesn't just mean there's a lot of people who like to dress up as gummy jelly. Evidently the videogame market, fortunately, still reserves surprises, especially for those who constantly try to force it into marketing dynamics.
At this point a consideration is urgent. The community of passionate gamers has been racking up for months on the epochal significance of the transition to the next-gen console on the one hand, and on the umpteenth run-up to the teraflop of the latest GPUs from the PC side. The debate often twists and turns between 4k, phantasmagoric framerates and computational Ghz, obviously without ever reaching objective certainties. The success of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, which is only the latest indie in order of time to clear the market, proves once again the centrality of the gaming experience before any technical detail. And in these times when commercial and financial diktats too often kill innovative ideas, it seems like a breath of fresh air.
Recall that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is currently only available for PlayStation 4 and PC. There are no other platforms announced at the moment, but the developer said he'd like to take it elsewhere in the future. And we believe it will not have too much trouble making its way, fortunately.
