Devil May Cry V Special Edition - PS5 Review

Review for Devil May Cry 5. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 08/03/2019

Devil May Cry 5 was the title that narrowly missed the top spot on the podium for the 2019 Game of the Year, thanks to Capcom's mastery of bringing back a much loved IP that for years had been lost along the way to the disappointment of not exactly enthusiastic fans. Although at the beginning Capcom has always denied the arrival of a Special Edition of Devil May Cry V, in the end here it is ready for the next generation consoles, or PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

On the other hand, it had now become a tradition, started with Devil May Cry 3 and also touched on the DMC reboot, although it was called Definite Edition. It is important to mention the Ninja Theory reboot, because a feature of that re-release was also taken up for this Special Edition of Devil May Cry V.

But what do you add this Special Edition? First of all, one of the most requested features by the community since the beginning, that is the chance to play as Vergil. In line with the other Special Editions of the series, this one also does not lack the possibility of making Dante's beloved brother playable, which in DMC V was more appreciated than usual thanks to the central role it had in the plot. Unfortunately, no history missions have been designed for Vergil, but simply the possibility of replaying all the main missions with him, plus the blood palace. This is a real shame because for how the story of DMC V was structured, a fourth point of view would have been very nice to add to those of Dante, V and Nero, perhaps even with a continuation of the ending since we do not know what yet. happens to Dante and Vergil after the credits.

The real problem with not having had any plot missions dedicated to Vergil is that some missions, particularly those of V, were not designed for his fighting style, which is largely based on melee attacks. In fact, it will happen that for some sessions, in particular the boss fights, it will take longer than expected.

Net of these shortcomings, however, let's talk about the real merit of having a character like Vergil playable, or his combat system. Its moveset can vary in real time depending on the weapons equipped, namely Beowulf, Yamato and Mirage Edge, recalling what has already been seen in its version of DMC 4. The Beowulfs are ideal for powerful and short-range shots since they are a set of punches and kicks; then there is the Yamato which alternates short and long distance depending on whether the katana is unlined or not; while the Mirage Edge recycles Dante's Rebellion a little. For long range there are the Mirage Blades, which are swords of energy that penetrate the flesh of enemies and can also act as protection.

All moveset can be enhanced thanks to concentration, represented by a bar that increases as you hit enemies without taking damage. With the concentration bar it is possible to summon "The world of V", which is a move in which Vergil sacrifices himself to summon his V-form for a short time in which he can harness the power of his familiars. The fuller the bar, the stronger V's pets will be summoned. It is not over here because like his brother Dante, Vergil also has his Sin Devil Trigger bar, which however will not transform him into a demon, but will allow him to summon his doppelganger that will double the strength of his combos as he will replicate all his actions. against enemies. You can even adjust the playback speed of the doppelganger combos using the arrow keys: fast, slow and normal.

It goes without saying that, in the face of everything we have told you, in the basic difficulty levels, the character of Vergil is as funny as it is powerful, ergo to find adequate levels of challenge you must immediately aim for the higher ones. Between these, we point out the presence of the return of the difficulty level called "Dark Knight", which transforms DMCV practically into a Musou. Taking advantage of the computing power of the new consoles, the game multiplies the hordes of exhibits displayed on the screen tenfold, but unlike the various musou, don't hope to make it with a trivial button mashing.

The monsters of DMC have no mercy and if by any chance you find yourself in the middle of a horde, you will hardly be a winner, even if you are a professional of the series. This mode requires a completely different approach because the balances are completely broken and requires a lot of hit and run attacks, without thinking of aiming for the SSS style, as much as survival. Surely with characters developed to the maximum it can make sense to face this type of challenge, otherwise, we anticipate it, do not even try it unless you want to farm red orbs, which are given here in industrial quantities.

We come now to the reason why this Special Edition will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, or the technical sector. Devil May Cry V presents three graphic options with which to enjoy this new edition of the game, all based on the activation or not of Ray tracing: by keeping it active you can choose whether to play at 4K at 30 FPS or at 1080p at 60 FPS, while deactivating it you can play at maximum frame rate, even reaching 120 FPS if you have special TVs that use HDMI 2.1.

To this Turbo Mode is added, a mode introduced at the time in Ninja Theory's DMC reboot, which allows you to play at a speed of 1.20 compared to the original. Having such a speed allows you to keep the pace of the game tight and requires a greater speed of execution of commands, especially for more complex combinations of moves. An experience to try.

Devil May Cry V Special Edition - PS5 Review

Devil May Cry V Special Edition is definitely an opportunity to get a taste of next gen on PS5 and Xbox Series X, an excuse not only to replay an excellent action game, but also to test yourself with Vergil, which we remember will still be accessible on other platforms by purchasing the DLC for 4.99 Euros. Vergil could have been better integrated into the main missions, perhaps with a story of his own, but he opted for the "homework" on that front, so we have to resign ourselves. On the other hand, fortunately, Vergil is a nice character to play and learn how to use, thanks to his varied and expandable moveset through the usual customization menu. To this we add the dark knight mode and the turbo mode, all sold at a "budget" price of 49.90 for us it seems sufficient to recommend it for sure to those who have never approached Devil May Cry V, but also to veterans who have not yet have had enough of this fantastic title.
