Always one of the most iconic and desired figures in the military is without a doubt the sniper, as practically always the zombies characterize the videogame computer medium with undead in all sauces. It is therefore obvious that the combination of the two trends has - over time - generated several successful titles and Zombie Army Trilogy it is definitely one of them. Rebellion rides the trend taking inspiration from the Sniper Elite saga and churns out a successful title, exalting in its simplicity, which after having landed on PlayStation 4, Xbox One e Steam in 2015, arrives today on Nintendo Switch.

The plot is simple and bordering on banal, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work: Hitler, in April 1945 with the fate of the third Reich now sealed, decides to resort to extreme measures. Having explored all the possibilities provided by esotericism and black magic (historical fact, Ed) he uses his discoveries to revive all fallen soldiers and turn them into hungry and unstoppable zombies. This gives rise to a dystopian reality where Nazi Germany resists and fights even after death. The task of the allies is therefore to finally put an end to the hegemony of the swastika. Armed only with a sniper rifle, a submachine gun and a pistol - alone or in the company of three friends - we will have to make our way and mow down hordes of zombies.

Zombie Army Trilogy rides the gameplay of the Sniper Elite series by tracing the stealth and reasoned mechanics of the aforementioned title, but adding a substantial part of the action. In fact, the sniper mechanics alone hidden in the shadows would not adapt to the context of hundreds of zombies advancing fiercely: it is therefore necessary to insert stops in the action to allow the player to regroup and counter the advance of the undead. Here are the waves of enemies that will be activated after each key advance and that will allow us to study the territory, take up positions and prepare to blow heads.

You will then find yourself in a fairly large portion of the map full of shelters and, once you have studied the place and decided where to post, you can advance just enough to trigger the enemy wave: now all that remains is to take a post and fire. But be careful, because not all enemies are the same: you will have agile and fast bobbing skeletons, explosive kamikazes, armed soldiers who shoot at random and armored tanks with extraordinary power and resistance. To this then you will have to add the random ability of the opponents to come back to life and that of crawling to the ground even if without legs: the only certainty will remain the tested bullet in the head.

Targeting another part of the body will blow limbs and slow enemies, but are unlikely to render them harmless; Moreover, even the dangling and irregular gait will not help the player of the Zombie Army Trilogy in his task of hitting the head of an undead from 150 meters away.

From the point of view of the physicality of the opponents, the work done by Rebellion in Zombie Army Trilogy is commendable. Difficult to identify and memorize the movement patterns and gait of the opponents, despite the fact that not having a brain they will all tend to simply proceed towards you by the shortest route. Losing your temper is undoubtedly the best way to succumb, failing one shot after another in haste, until you have no more defenses.

In these cases the inaccurate medium-short range weapon could save your life, if it were not so difficult to govern and with a reduced ammunition capacity. Instead, it is useless to rely on the gun, unless you want to bring yourself so close to the zombies that you can see the glassy pallor of their eyes.

It must be said that as regards the weapons sector, we cannot complain: for sniper rifles we will have various models available that differ in range, aiming zoom, recoil and magazine capacity. Finding the one that best suits your play style is up to you. As for the machine guns, however, the canons of differentiation are mainly due to the handling of the weapon and offensive capacity. The same goes for the guns even if as mentioned before we find it a useful tinsel only once all the bullets of the other weapons are finished. The offensive equipment is completed by landmines, wire bombs, dynamite and grenades, all useful in the most agitated situations to thin out the enemy ranks.

Unfortunately, the physics of the landscape and the map leave something to be desired. Apart from rare bottles, relegated to collectibles, and explosive objects scattered around the screen, the rest of the landscape offers no interaction apart from a few sporadic exceptions. To understand, it is impossible to shoot a street lamp to create a shadow cone, but it must be said that objectively it is not a feature that is missed during the adventure proposed by Zombie Army Trilogy.

At first glance, the reasoned combination of Sniper Elite with a zombie context didn't seem so funny but, in practice, it turns out to be a very pleasant pastime., to be enjoyed both alone and in company and which also gives some ideas to be faced several times. You can choose a run to tackle with the easy level, which does not take into account the physics of the bullets fired and which offers plenty of ammunition using the FPS component of the game, and then proceed with a run in expert mode where we will have to calculate every single shot fired. and sip the ammunition, also calculating the wind and the range and - above all - staying hidden as much as possible.

On Nintendo Switch Zombie Army Trilogy is flawless. Thanks to a simple gameplay, an acceptable graphic detail but which does not have to deal with who knows what subtleties and a series of rather static scenarios, the title is granite and with really short loading times, which favor even short game sessions allowing you to enjoy this FPS Horror in an excellent way also in portability. The sound sector is also excellent, which, even without showing off memorable pieces, manages to always be on the piece, with a series of themed and precise effects and accompaniments.

Zombie Army Trilogy - Nintendo Switch Review

There are three complete campaigns that the Zombie Army Trilogy experience offers and they are accompanied by a Horde mode that sees zombies in continuous jet advance in maps specially designed for the occasion: this guarantees the player hours of fun, alone or in company. Additional features of the Nintendo Switch version are characterized by the ability to enable Motion Control and an even more realistic experience thanks to HD Rumble. Finally, portability offers as always an added value that always provides that icing on the cake that Nintendo Switch users are accustomed to now.

Honorable mention for the X-ray Killcam, icon of the series, which also here provides that pleasant and appreciable added value: the development team is also good, providing special settings for this feature that decide if and how much to make the Killcam appear, providing an adequate context whether you want a frenetic action or if you want to tickle your ego with a game of high levels where, after having calculated wind and power, it is a must to enjoy your shot with a “slow motion” effect with a camera on the bullet and an exciting transparent impact.

Zombie Army Trilogy lands on Nintendo Switch after having delighted a large slice of the public on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Thanks to the excellent porting of Rebellion, the title offers several interesting ideas and many hours of fun, thanks also to the multiplayer and the Horde mode that will see us face an infinite zombie army. The satisfaction of killing an undead Führer is also priceless. Not to be missed, especially now that you can enjoy it in full portability.
