Mud, sweat and glory

Reducing MXGP 20 to a banal official game of the Motocross Championship would be a real injustice. In addition to pure and simple races, in fact, there is much more. Although the Career mode is at the center of everything, you can enjoy yourself in the Playground to explore freely a setting inspired by the Norwegian fjords. It is undoubtedly the best way to approach the physics of the bike and learn how to tame the many horses delivered abruptly on the dirt road. Our advice is to spend some time exploring the Playground, in such a way that become masters of the vehicle in a gradual and fun way. The difficulty of the AI, while scalable from the game options, is far from affordable at first. If you want to reap important results right away, you need to be patient because finding yourself navigating the rear is anything but a remote option. The career mode game starts you from MX2 (two-stroke engines up to 125cc and four-stroke engines up to 250cc) and we are already sweating. Starting from MXGP (two-stroke engines up to 250cc and four-stroke engines up to 450cc) it's out of the question.

The interaction with the Dualsense is exceptional: every vibration of the ground comes directly into the player's hands and the handling of the bike is incredibly realistic. Every time the engine goes to limiter, for example, the vibration increases. The roughness of the terrain translates into changes in the sensitivity of the keys, generating a continuous feedback that allows you to understand when you are exaggerating in driving.

Still within the Playground mode, Milestone has made available Waypoint mode: all you have to do is choose a starting point, place the waypoints where you like best and complete the route. At the end you can share your route and lap time online. Personalization is definitely in the foreground in MXGP 20, which also offers you a Track Editor maniacally cared for: four types of terrain, management of altitudes to model the jumps and ups and downs and practically endless fun. In addition to sharing the created tracks, you can also download the tracks of other players.

Don't forget that MXGP 20 will have significant post launch support, with three other modalities that will arrive soon. In addition to the co-op in the Playground, where you can explore the map and challenge your friends, there will be the Synchronous Waypoint (multiplayer) and the Race Director mode. They are all three focused on multiplayer, where in addition to running and challenging other players, you can practically be a referee, creating challenges and lots of fun.

Graphics and Audio

MXGP 2020: The Official Motocross Videogame - Review

The immersion offered by the MXGP20 is practically total, in fact nothing is left to chance. The tracks are very realistic and above all dynamic: as it happens in reality, lap after lap the track “marks itself” as the bikes pass and changes lap after lap. Dirtings such as mud and water are visible both on the rider's visor and on the suit. The bike models are perfectly realistic, both as details and as sponsors, while the audience frame is always present on the track. Lhe next gen version fully supports 4K and there are no noticeable drops in frame rates. The game holds up even in the most excited moments such as tussle. The audio is excellent, both as soundtracks and as effects. Motocross engines all look a little alike in reality, but the game still manages to point out the small differences.

Multiplayer

MXGP 2020: The Official Motocross Videogame - Review

Milestone has prepared for MXGP20 low latency, broadband server. This allows you to have many more players in a single race and, at the same time, to have greater reliability. It was not possible to try this mode very much due to the lack of players, but the effort to do a good job is undeniable. Having many online modes even after the launch of the game, it was absolutely necessary to carry out a detailed work like this that we are sure will be able to bear fruit.

MXGP20 is a very well done title. The only flaw for someone could be the difficulty, which is not at all affordable even with the AI set at an easy level. While using all the aids, winning races turns out to be complicated, but on the other hand that's how motocross is: difficult and merciless. The next gen can be seen, motocross like this has never been seen in a video game. The available modes are fun, more will come and the feeling is that Milestone has really raised the bar. Engage the first gear and gas, the holeshot awaits you!
