Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition - Review

Review for Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Definitive Edition. Game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 18/08/2020

When it comes to role-playing games, among true nerds, the first thing you think about is not a video game, but a table surrounded by kids, with Masters, pencil, and character sheet on paper. The journey and adventure of many young people began many years ago with the advent of Dungeons & Dragons, but since then the world of role-playing games has expanded, bringing us pearls such as Vampires the Masquerade and the Dark Ages, Sine Requie, Nameless Land , or precisely Pathfinder. Pathfinder is essentially a role-playing game very similar to d & d, created by big fans of the aforementioned who have tried to create a "correct" experience from everything that they believe did not work and needed to be revised. To put it in technical terms, Pathfinder is a kind of revisited and improved D&D.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker takes the experience of the board game and proposes it on screen, where the figure of the Master is replaced by the internal narration of the video game. Obviously compared to a real role-playing game, compromises must be accepted on a videogame: we will certainly not have the opportunity to interpret our character at will and do and say what we want, but Pathfinder: Kingmaker does its best to allow us to be as free as possible.

The adventure begins with the classic creation of the character: once a personalization of the external appearance has been made, we can choose the race, class, talents, alignment, skills, and any known spells. In the Definitive Edition of Pathfinder: Kingmaker there are also all the DLCs previously released, including the ability to choose the Tiefling race and kineticist class. It must be said that the choice is enormous, and we will probably even spend a couple of hours deciding which build to use for our hero. On top of that, if the player is new to the world of tabletop RPGs and Pathfinder, they will find themselves terribly lost and confused due to the amount of options and the amount of text present, however the game does its best to explain each technical term in detail.

At that point our story will begin: that of an adventurer who answered the call of Jamandi Aldori, the one who reigns in Restov, in his mansion. Here Aldori tells us about the Stolen Lands, no man's lands but desired by all the neighboring realms. Precisely because not yet annexed to any kingdom, the Stolen Lands have been claimed by a group of bandits, led by a thief who calls himself Stag Lord. Our mission is to defeat the bandits and reclaim those lands, in exchange Aldori will give us the title of baron and a castle to dominate the very lands we have liberated. Of course, things never go our way, and the situation will become very complicated as we continue our journey, eventually discovering that the Stag Lord is not quite what we thought and that the threat could be far greater than expected.

The heart of the game is very similar to what we find on titles like Baldur's Gate or Pillars of Eternity: the combat allows us to pause when we want so as to give the characters the orders and then see the situation evolve by itself, then managing man hand in this way the following moves. Pathfinder: Kingmaker, however, in its Definitive Edition, adds turn-based combat option, which allows even greater fidelity to the paper role-playing game. With this mode, once entered into combat, the initiative of the characters will be rolled to see the turn of the actions, and then each character will carry out, individually, the action decided until he has made a movement, an attack, or an action free.

As already mentioned, the Definitive Edition of Pathfinder: Kingmaker includes all the DLCs, which go far beyond the simple additional race and class. In the Varnhold's Lot story, which takes place parallel to the main storyline, we will have the opportunity to collaborate with another baron of the Stolen Lands. The Beneath the Stolen Lands DLC instead presents an infinite procedural dungeon, within which there will also be monsters and exclusive bosses.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition is the perfect title for those who are still indoors more than usual in this difficult period of our life. The game world and what it offers is huge, and we will even spend hundreds of hours on the game without actually seeing everything yet. For lovers of tabletop role-playing games it is a title that will not fail to thrill, but for newbies it could be a huge obstacle the amount of content that the tutorial cannot fully overcome.
