Peaky Blinders: Mastermind - Review

The game, considerable as a prequel to the events experienced by the famous Shelby family in the television transposition, supports its foundations in a plot developed in collaboration with the author of the series, or Steven Knight, who in fact manages to provide the adventure with some of the characteristic notes of the seasons broadcast.

Core of Peaky Blinders: Mastermind turns out to be planning: in fact, in order to proceed along the tracks of the story, it is necessary to carefully choose the actions and the characters, who must always be in the right place at the right time. Very important in this sense is the possibility of rewinding time which, immediate and intuitive when taking on the role of a single character, is more complex and difficult to manage in the presence of different members of the gang.

Each of the latter possesses characteristic abilities, usable only in certain situations and in a certain way: the example is Ada, capable with her charm of distracting guards and members of rival gangs for the time necessary to allow her brothers to act. undisturbed.

This feature and the diversity of characters available in Peaky Blinders: Mastermind succeed in many sequences to offer the right level of challenge to the player, who is thus forced to arrive at the resolution of a puzzle where every single member of the team has a function to perform with the right timing, in a fusion of actions, consequences and little time available.

A similar peculiarity, however, has a negative side: missions that are too rich in characters and actions to complete can end up extremely slowing down the gameplay, even becoming frustrating in the long term. In a similar type of missions, in fact, full of small passages to fit together as best as possible, a single mistake is enough to block the actions of all the actors on the scene, forcing the player to rewind the time completely to modify the wrong passage.

The simpler missions, on the other hand, can be boring and at times seem almost like a way to extend the duration of the gameplay and fill a hole between the most important phases of the story.

From a purely technical and graphic point of view the title signed by FuturLab loses much of its charm due to the team's choice to adopt only an isometric view which, despite its ability to perfectly render Small Heath's characteristic atmospheres, leads to various imperfections and the absence of details. To lift the morale are, in part, the short illustrated sequences that introduce the missions, pleasant to see even if not free from some too many defects.

Peaky Blinders: Mastermind - Review

Peaky Blinders: Mastermind shows itself as a title with a double nature. The game has in fact an intriguing component, mainly provided by the characters, their skills and a simple soundtrack but in line with the atmosphere of the title; However, all this is accompanied by a note of dissatisfaction, given in particular by the difficulty of some sequences and by various imperfections that could certainly have been better treated to make the experience more usable and intriguing.
