Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Complete WalkthroughObject list

Before starting, here is a short list of the collectibles that you will encounter during your adventure and that will be essential for you to complete the game.

Stars: collect in every galaxy. 70 of them are needed to finish the adventure, but in the whole game there are 240 of them.

coins: each of them will earn you a health point and, as in any game dedicated to Mario, for every hundred coins you will get a life. Your coin count is added to the total when you complete a level and earn a star.

Star Bits: as in the first episode, it is possible to collect them simply by pointing the Wii-mote at the screen; similarly, by pressing B, you can shoot the collected Star Bits by aiming the remote control to stun the enemies. As with coins, 100 Star Bits collected translates into an extra life.

1-up: The very famous green mushroom. Collect it and you will get an extra life.

Comet Medal: a gold medal that unlocks a bonus level where you can usually collect the secret stars of a galaxy.

Mushroom-Star:  Red mushrooms with yellow stars on the back. Collect them to bring Mario's maximum health to 6 points instead of the canonical 3. The power-up effect will last until you are hit more than 3 times in a row; in this case your energy will go back to being divided into only 3 segments (NB: the extra health will always be restored by collecting a coin).

    Tutorial

After a very short introduction, Mario will appear above a pipe in a 2-D world: this level will be a tutorial to allow you to familiarize yourself with the game controls:

    Jump (A)
Long jump (click + Z to crouch and then immediately A)
    Vertical Smash (jump + Z)
    Backward somersault (Z + A)
Side somersault (sprint + controller strike in the opposite direction + A during a slide)
Triple Jump (jump three times in a row, on the third jump Mario will jump very high)
Shoot the Star Bits (Aim the Wii-mote and press B)
Wall jump (touch a wall in midair while holding the controller towards it and press A to jump in the opposite direction)
Rotation (shake the WiiMote; this will only be possible after encountering the sparkles)

If you've played the first Super Mario Galaxy you shouldn't have any problems with the controls.

After the tutorial, proceed to the princess's castle to meet Bowser, made bigger and more powerful by the power of the stars. Bowser has captured Princess Peach to exploit her culinary prowess and have her serve her evil regime. As in the previous episode, Mario's archenemy intends to create an empire at the center of the universe. You are ready? The chase begins!

Head to the castle entrance to meet the sparkles and the game's first throwing star (to be used by simply shaking the Wii-mote), which will catapult you to the first galaxy.
