What happens when to a reassuring clone of Diablo, add a pinch of Magic and Puppeteer? The answer is in Book of Demons, hack 'n' slash published and developed by Thing Trunk, an unrecognized development team geographically located in beautiful Warsaw.

Will a study practically ignored until now be able to convince the difficult taste buds of Epic Videogames Guide? Let's find out in this spoiler free review.

Book of Demons - Review

The vicissitudes narrated in Book of Demons, just to give a minimum smattering of the general setting, take hold in the world of Paperverse, a dimension with a dreamlike flavor in which every living element is not made up of colorful paper. The development of the work, which has been going on for over two years now, has reached a point that allows the game to come out of its early access status, distributing the possibility of letting itself be discovered in all its entirety.

At first glance, the product would turn out to be a dull epitome of Diablo, resolving in a series of battles with the white weapon, sometimes made easier (or difficult) through the intervention of magic and secondary effects characterized by a high coefficient of destructiveness.

The whole Book of Demons universe, and this is the characteristic that distinguishes it from a shameless copy and paste of the Blizzard title, has its own playful foundations on the introduction of a system for managing skills, equipment and so on by means of a whole series of cards, deployable on the playfield at the cost of precious mana.

A bit like in any collectible card game, in short, homo ludens will be able to enjoy enhanced offensive / defensive advantages and tools simply by donating part of their ability to deploy cards (mana) to the right cause of a hopeful survival.

Book of Demons - Review

Book of Demons is a race to the Underworld, having as its ultimate goal the killing of a cursed beast with horns and red wings with a slight demonic flavor that, in the review, we will avoid mentioning so as not to be too blasphemous ... At least at Christmas!

As you continue into the depths of the labyrinth, the difficulty obviously increases, sometimes touching peaks that the player could not be properly prepared for.. We move from rooms where the challenge rate is practically inconsistent to sections where blasphemy is practically assured.

Overall, however, a little more variety would probably have made the production more palatable. The average user, in fact, might find it disturbing to face the claustrophobic dungeons of this seamless binary work, limiting himself only to blasting everything that moves, in search of the perfect loot.

To be commended the introduction of the Flexiscope, a very powerful tool through which the gamer can shape the rhythm, length and difficulty of the various dungeons proposed by the game through a few, very simple clicks… If you want to face Book of Demons with the omnipresent keyboard and mouse combination!

The demonic prosopope by Thing Trunk also supports the pad, with truly convincing results. Although it does not achieve mouse accuracy, even a good controller allows you to achieve excellent results.

Graphically well-finished, Book of Demons is a video game that, given the low hardware requirements, can run very well on any PC equipped with at least decent technology. The dark settings of the title go well with the light-hearted representation of the characters and monsters that populate the game environment, managing to combine a gloomy atmosphere with elements designed with a style different from the usual dark fantasy we are used to in this genre of productions.

Book of Demons - Review

Book of Demons is a courageous production but tied to the stylistic features of its genre of reference. A mix of old, new and original that - although not without flaws - leaves a good memory at the end of the journey, a few unkind words addressed to the sky and lots and lots of fun.
