The second chapter of the adventures of the most beloved luchador in videogames has arrived on our consoles, making the combat exciting and interesting with Guacamelee! 2 to Steam e PlayStation 4.

In a world that is divided between living beings and the inhabitants of the underworld, you will return to impersonate the great luchador Juan to save the world from something dark, mysterious and sacred that could lead to the end of the world we all know. Five years after the first world release, the second chapter is finally ready to be played by all fans of the scrolling fighting game.

The return of the luchador

It's been seven years since our protagonist Juan saved Lupita, the mayor's daughter, from the bony hands of the demon Calaca. The effort to save the damsel was worth it, now I'm a happy family with two beautiful children. Despite everything, Juan misses the fight and often looks back with nostalgia at old photos in which he was celebrated as the strongest champion of all time.

It seems to be the end of his days as a fighter until, while searching for an avocado to prepare tacos for his children, strange black shadows appear in the sky and the skeletons return to haunt the world of the living. Chivo, the goat master who accompanied us in the first episode, gets to ask for our help to put things right before the Mexiverso disappears forever.

A fearsome undead named Salvador, accompanied by his henchmen, a magician, a dead dog woman e (yes, you are reading quite well) a cactus with a strange talking crow on its head, came to look for the three artifacts hidden around the darker time line. His treasure hunt has one purpose: find the key to Oltremundo arriving at the place where all time converges and find the sacred guacamole invented by the god Tiempochtli, as he believes it will give him divine powers and cure his disease.

Toast, the masked fighter who both helped and betrayed us in the first episode, will come to us handing us the luchador mask, which she accompanied on our adventures before the wedding. In addition to our Lupita, i Chivo (the goat master) of all ages will help Juan learn new fighting techniques waiting for us during our adventure in the statues Chozo (a small tribute from the developers to Metroid) giving us a great help to continue our journey for save the Mexiverso.

Use all your strength to save the world

With much smoother gameplay and a decidedly more compelling storyline, in Guacamelee! 2 it all seems very similar to the previous chapter but with news that should not be underestimated. THE DrinkBox Studios have decided to donate, with the advent of this new adventure, a new multiplayer mode supported to fight together up to four players. Even your fellow fights, as always, will be able to use the teachings of the master Chivo so as to get to complete the game in no time at all.

also the fighting techniques taught by the Chozo statues they may apparently look the same to you, yet some great new features have been added, including the ability to jump across the screen using one of the new special techniques: the eagle hook. This is just one of the new special moves that you can acquire during your journey in the Dark Time line, the many others you can discover during your game in the ambiguous world of Guacamelee! 2.

The new battle skills aren't the only new feature in Guacamelee! 2: During the game, some characters (including some of your former enemies) will propose challenges to you. Once you pass, you can buy various skills wherever you are by simply accessing the map. Among the five themes available, in this review we present the first two: "Palestra da Chamoya" and "Furious Combat".

In first sector, Chamoya gym, you can strengthen your stamina or increase your life bar. In second, Furious Combat, based on the number of your combo during the fight with enemies, you will receive a boost of your attacks. Each sector contains six to twelve purchasable cards to get some useful boosts during the fight.

An interesting second chapter

In this second chapter of Guacamelee! 2 there are no great news. In fact, both for the graphics and for the sound sector, there have been no improvements or updates in this regard. The simple fact that the voices were not included during the main movies leads us to understand that the target audience must be placed in an age group ranging from 10 years upwards, despite the gameplay being very adaptable to all ages. The simple fact that it is necessary to have played the previous chapter to understand the plot well makes it clear that the target that the developers have set themselves is very low. Just to start approaching the game, you need to know the main buttons, otherwise it will lead to a sad and continuous death.

Guacamelee! 2 appears to be a simple continuum of a story that ended seven years earlier and forced to continue. A legend of a sacred guacamole that a tyrannical God created and then happily went to sleep for centuries has something absurd. Even the characters that surround the plot seem to have come out of a strange comic created by a twelve-year-old.

Guacamelee! 2 - Review

Guacamelee! 2 is still a nice scrolling fighting game similar to Metroid and Castlevania, but not as much as the previous one. We are putting our hopes on some future updates by crossing our fingers with the desire that there will be no simple reason to create future paid DLCs.
