Saints Row IV: Re-elected is an action video game, the fourth installment of the Saints Row series developed by Deep Silver Volition and from High Voltage Software which has the city of Steelport, with a retro-futuristic setting, similar to a very distorted Washington. Released on August 23, 2013 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and for PC A port on the Nintendo E-Shop for Nintendo Switch. But how does it actually perform on this hybrid console?

Saints Row is a saga that has never focused on graphic beauty and even the fourth chapter implies it. Saints Row IV: Re-elected in fact it had animations and a very backward graphic rendering when it was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so even this re-release for the Nintendo Switch does not particularly stand out for its graphic quality. It happens often and willingly to come across low-resolution scenes, complete with too obvious pixels, but leading to a general fluidity of the title that is not obvious especially when compared with other games in the shop of this console.

Let's start with the plot: you are the President of the United States of America and you have to save everyone here on Earth from a terrible threat. The boss of the Saints was elected president of the United States but this is just the beginning. After a catastrophic alien invasion of Earth led by the evil warlord Zinyak, the Saints have been transported to a virtual reconstruction of Steelport in reverse. With friends old and new by their side, as well as an arsenal of super powers and strange weapons, they will have to fight to free humanity from the psychological grip of the alien lord Zinyak. Starting from the crack shop, the Saints have made their way to luxury penthouses to enter the White House, but now it's your turn to rid the world of Zinyak and his alien empire, saving him in the wildest open-world game of all.

The character creation menu is full of modifiable parameters to create the perfect Saint! From the hair down, trying every single change, our character came to life after twenty minutes with a truly unexpected result. If, on the other hand, the success of the character is not interested, the classic button comes in handy to create a random character and you could see some good ones!

The game menu is easy to consult, but inside it hides many and many goodies to be able to enhance your character and to make your game experience the most bizarre, bizarre but at the same time complete as possible.

Saints Row IV: Re-elected - Review

Saints Row IV: Re-elected knows how to keep you glued to the screen thanks to the vast game map that offers a lot of things to do really above all limits. We move from challenges based on the use of super-powers, such as super races or hoops with people and objects with telekinesis, to more classic ones that will require the theft of cars or carnage on the streets of Steelport. There is also no shortage of shops where you can buy new costumes for your character, get tattoos, modify the cars saved in the garage and your own weapons. All these shops to be unlocked must be "hacked" by our protagonist.

With all these customizations, this title has practically no competition, also highlighting the demented spirit that has become iconic from the first Saints Row, the trademark of the series. This map will be explored from top to bottom during the main assignments.

Saints Row IV: Re-elected has a really high longevity thanks to the numerous main story assignments and the time-consuming side assignments. We can assure you that already for each gang member unlocked in the main story, there are at least five side missions to carry out. Thanks to all these missions, the title should give you at least twenty hours of thrilling gameplay: the only flaw in our opinion is the banality of some missions that end in a flash.

Another peculiarity of this title is the ability to use various powers to create total havoc in Steelport. Active powers are those used to sweep any person or object that passes in front of the protagonist, the others instead lead to the rapid reaching of a place on the vast map that this game offers. The downside of these powers comes when they are abused. In my opinion these should only be used during side missions or to "mess around" around Steelport. Using them continuously throughout the story you go to finish the missions immediately without a hint of difficulty.

The upgrades instead lead to the permanent improvement of both the character and the gang. Starting from increasing your health and stamina, up to being able to carry more ammunition with you and reduce the damage caused by the enemies themselves. These upgrades have a cost (often exaggerated) and are very useful in order to complete the vastness of the missions present on this title.

Here without a doubt Volition leaves free choice on the use of cheats to be able to mess even more in style. Thanks to these, in fact, you can have infinite ammunition, weapons, cars and much more to maximize your gaming experience. Just like you would in the universe of Grand Theft Auto. Of course, some tricks can make the experience unique while others cause a series of unpleasant events that may force you to start over (use them with caution).

Substantial differences between this port and the version released in 2013 are practically absent. Everything that was developed in the PS4 title has only undergone a re-adaptation due to the change of platform. All the old animations, full pixel effects and some bugs have been reported almost as 1: 1 copy in this new title.

In conclusion, we can say that Saints Row IV: Re-elected on Switch is not affected by the explosions nor dozens of characters displayed on the screen. The title is fluid and fully enjoyable in all cases. Which in games like these often does not go as a priority. If you want to spend this quarantine period exploring and immersing yourself in the adventures of the Saints, this title is for you.

The game is available on the Nintendo store for € 39,99.
