Dragon Ball FighterZ - Nintendo Switch Review

Review for Dragon Ball FighterZ. Game for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 26/01/2018 The version for Nintendo Switch came out on 28/09/2018

Without a doubt, the life and deeds of little Goku are part of one of the most told and lived stories by generations of fans all over the world. Thanks to an exceptional narrative and unparalleled character growth - both from the point of view of the character and from the technical point of view - the story of the brave people of the Saiyans and the friends built in the sweat of a thousand battles has moved and moves millions of people around the world. Few were the media phenomena of such magnitude and duration and the creator, Akira Toriyama, has always believed and supported all those who wanted to participate in his project, thus giving life to hundreds and hundreds of accessory media (in addition to the manga that has sold over 250 million copies worldwide): just think that only videogames inspired by the saga are over 100, not counting DLC and Spin Offs.

But 2018 is the year that saw one of the best fighting games inspired by the saga, thanks to the work of Arc System Works e Bandai Namco, come to life and land on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and now also on Nintendo Switch. Let's talk about Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Our review has already extensively gutted the title itself but it seems right to mention the plot and gameplay anyway since they are both strengths of this small masterpiece. Akira Toriyama supports a script that not only holds up, but remains in line with the story and characters of the characters, creating a trend in itself, as if it were simply a new adventure of our favorites. Evil protagonist is android n. 21 which, after having assimilated the characteristic of Majin Buu that makes it able to eat enemies after having transformed them into sweets, uses it to assimilate the powers and the level of combat.

Easy to guess at this point that our opponent will be a really tough nut to crack, especially since it has managed to clone practically all the greatest warriors of the saga and weaken its human counterparts. Fortunately, the golden heart and pure soul of android n. 16 allowed a soul (avatar of us players) to enter the body of the warrior on duty to provide him with the energy and the ability to fight at his best.

Dragon Ball FighterZ - Nintendo Switch Review

Dragon Ball FighterZ incorporates the type of combat of Marvel Vs, with combos and attacks to multiple characters, and above all with the spectacular special and supreme moves. The development team, however, manages to absorb the combat system by simplifying it and, by chaining special attacks and aura hits, makes us able to create devastating and highly spectacular combos. Defense breaker and teleportation are integrated with the combinations of the three attacks (weak, medium and strong) and with simple and special aura strikes, almost all of which can be performed with a simple crescent back or forth, creating one of the most successful fighting games of all times.

But be careful, because if you think that simplifying the commands takes away the thickness of the title, you are wrong: The combat possibilities range with an impressive variety and make Dragon Ball FighterZ a technical and precise title, which will see you protagonists of epic and devastating battles. The port on Nintendo Switch, then, makes everything even more spectacular: only on this platform a feature has been added to simplify some commands in concatenation. Its use is practical only when playing by dividing the Joy-Con into local multiplayer, given the need to have two backbones on each side.

Dragon Ball FighterZ - Nintendo Switch Review

Some have raised doubts about the ability of the newborn from Nintendo to manage the title: after having tried it for a long time we feel we can reassure everyone on the final result, which not only stands up to comparison with the Sony and Microsoft flagships but even manages to offer an extra gear thanks to the portability of Nintendo Switch. With a slight (and we emphasize slight) downgrade of the Bandai Namco wallpapers manages to guarantee 1080p and 60 FPS almost never uncertain in all situations, both on laptop and on the big screen. A result that amazes and makes a title like this 100% usable on the move to the great satisfaction of all Nintendaries.

During our tests the online sector did not submit  the slightest hint of uncertainty, neither during clashes nor during matchmacking, which has an acceptable waiting time and a good proposal of users. There are two exclusive features of the Nintendo Switch version: Special multiplayer that can be performed with two consoles (and two copies of the game) and the ability to play up to 6 players in offline Party Match mode. The only drawback of the port, but which we still consider acceptable, is that by sending the laptop to stand-by you are forced to exit completely from the game and restart it from scratch when you want to resume the game.

While this is normal, if you are playing the console online in Story mode - which itself does not need a connection - by putting the console on standby (or even if the line drops), you will lose the progress saved and you are returned to the title screen.

In this port, a complete basic roster is immediately present, naturally without the unlockables that will be obtained by continuing the adventure, like android 21 that you will get for example after completing the three main story arcs. Unfortunately, the paid fighters, all included in the Season Pass if desired, are not included in the purchase of the basic title: they are instead all present in the Complete Edition. The great news for all buyers of the game on Switch is the welcome bonus prepared by the developers: 200000 Zeni, useful to quickly reach the 300000 needed to unlock Vegeta SSGSS and to move forward in reaching the 500000 needed for Goku SSGSS.

Dragon Ball FighterZ - Nintendo Switch Review

Dragon Ball FighterZ has already positively amazed the owners of PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, but Arc System Works and Bandai Namco have achieved a deadly combo, giving the possibility to enjoy the title even to owners of Nintendo Switch. Too bad for the missed possibility of the online cross platform, which would have given that extra point that would have made the title almost perfect. In any case, the peculiar feature of Switch to make any title usable on the move gives Dragon Ball a couple of points more on our final evaluation compared to the Sony and Microsoft counterparts.
