What has made portable consoles successful is their ability to deliver hit and run experiences that can be enjoyed practically anywhere.. In recent years, however, mobile phones have gone to occupy this slice of the market and laptops have mostly become trinkets no longer suitable for the current era. As often happened, however, Nintendo had a brilliant idea that suddenly upset the balance of the gaming market.

We are talking about Switch, a console that for the first time offers the possibility of enjoying its titles both on the go and on the TV in the living room. It will not surprise you to know that alongside the more classic experiences such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, the console is receiving numerous titles more inclined to the portable market including puzzle game, rhythm game, racing arcade and more. .

One of the products to keep an eye on in late 2017 is Matis Burn Racing, arcade racing with a top view that nostalgically recalls the glorious 90s video games dedicated to the famous Micro Machines.

Mantis Burn Racing - Switch Review

Mantis Burn Racing is a simple, immediate, fun product and that does not want to bore the player with unnecessary frills that would otherwise burden the experience. Each element is in fact specifically designed to be understandable at a glance, from the user interface to the gameplay, and this is probably one of its greatest strengths. The portable philosophy expressed at maximum power, isn't it great? But let's go in order and let's get to know each of the components of which it is made up.

The control system, although essential, is able to deliver to the user all the functions of a real racing game. Of course, the driving model is necessarily different as it is placed in a top-down context and no longer with a view into the passenger compartment or immediately behind the car. However, this does not compromise the general feeling of speed that the developers wanted to instill in their creature and this will be seen especially in the most advanced vehicle classes. There will also be some noteworthy goodies such as the turbo or the possibility of drifting; these will make you feel at home in the blink of an eye and contribute to making the Mantis Burn Racing driving system even more dynamic, fast and adrenaline-pumping.

What can we say about the track design instead? The developers seem to have spent a good amount of energy to infuse their product with an original and challenging track structure. On more than one occasion it will be necessary to tackle the corners with a minimum of attention and this is because the title tends to punish those who make too many mistakes during a competition. This denotes a well-developed artificial intelligence which, however, is never particularly frustrating or omnipotent: the game lets itself be played, punishes when it has to but at the same time rewards if the right strategies have been adopted.

To increase the longevity we think the numerous contents that this Mantis Burn Racing makes available to the player. First of all, we have numerous seasons to which you can participate, each made up of various events that differ from each other in the objective to be completed. Winning events then leads to receiving cash prizes and unlocking spare parts: Upgrades are key as the right configuration can make the difference between a crushing defeat and a glorious victory. If you love online challenges then, the title offers the possibility both to beat the time records of the opponents, and to compete in real time against users from all over the world. An excellent selection of possibilities, no doubt about it.

The weakest points of Mantis Burn Racing can be identified in the technical sector: on Nintendo Switch the game runs smoothly and has a good clean image, however, the artistic direction leaves much to be desired. The tracks are all a little alike, the predominant colors are mostly cold colors and in terms of details, the scenarios are decidedly bare. The game is therefore not the best of shows and a more courageous direction would certainly have enticed a few more players. Fortunately, the soundtrack is pleasant while bugs and glitches are almost absent.

Mantis Burn Racing - Switch Review

Mantis Burn Racing is a real harp: a simple and immediate title that can be enjoyed both at home and in the queue at the post office. Of course, it does not innovate anything and does not propose anything brave or little used, but its task does it quite well so that the feeling is that of the original chapters of the Micro Machines brand. Too bad for a really subdued visual sector, made up of washed-out textures, dull color palettes and very few details on the screen: we hope that in a future sequel all these defects will finally be resolved.
