Spintires: MudRunner - Review

Review for Spintires: MudRunner. Game for PC, Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the video game was released on 31/10/2017 The version for Nintendo Switch came out on 27/11/2018

If you are a lover of heavy vehicles, exceptional transport and extreme driving conditions, then Spintires: MudRunner, first chapter of the series Spintires to be available as well as on PC also on Playstation 4 e Xbox One, it might be the game for you. Loading and transporting logs to the sawmill might seem like a relatively simple goal to achieve, but not in this simulator: trucks to repair, run out of fuel, rivers to wade, and almost completely non-existent asphalt will always be there ready to put the logs in your wheels.

Spintires: MudRunner - Review

The game of Saber Interactive appears well structured and capable of amusing lovers of this genre: 19 vehicles Different off-road vehicles, each with specific characteristics, push the player to search for the most suitable route for the vehicle they are driving. The only tools available to reach the destination will in fact be a map and a compass, with the path manually traced by the player interacting with the map which, to make everything more interesting, will initially be partially obscured.

The game modes

The game modes are essentially 3: the tutorial, the single and multi player mode and, finally, the fide. The tutorial, it is easy to say, allows the player to familiarize himself with the main controls and then start playing. In the single player mode we will have, depending on the map and the chosen difficulty, to transport logs to the various sawmills that will be unlocked with the continuation of the game only once certain conditions are met. The map will initially appear only partially and to reveal it completely you will have to reach, without being able to trace a path, certain points called observation points. However, we will need to choose the right vehicle for each action we want to perform: on the map there will be several unlockable vehicles by simply reaching them with another vehicle but be careful, this does not mean that they are ready for use, because they may be out of fuel or they may have to needing spare parts that can only be obtained from other vehicles. Once the main objective required has been completed, we will be able to return to the main menu to face a new scenario and continue our career as extreme haulers.

In the multiplayer mode we will have to behave exactly like in the single player, in cooperative for up to 4 players, then we can get help from 3 friends in achieving the objectives to move on to the next scenarios.

The challenge mode contains 9 mini-scenarios with a main objective and 3 bonus objectives that I can be the most disparate (even scare a certain number of birds by sounding the horn), which will mainly help the player to deepen the game dynamics not present in the tutorial before trying their hand at the actual game.

The gameplay

Spintires: MudRunner looks like a game from fluid and dynamic gameplay but that, at least initially, can give many problems in the management of the different game views. The controls, which at first appear a bit cumbersome, in the long run turn out to be quite intuitive, thanks to the fact that we will always find on-screen instructions to simplify the required maneuvers (loading / unloading, repairs, towing, refueling).

The technical sector

Although there is no real soundtrack, the audio sector of Spintires: MudRunner is full of sound effects well inserted and synchronized with the animations in the game, made very realistic by the remarkable graphic engine, which makes the technical sector well done and integrated into the entire videogame work.

Spintires: MudRunner - Review

Spintires: MudRunner is a discrete level simulator with not too complicated gameplay, but not so simple as to make it a trivial driving game. The well-kept and spot-on technical sector, a varied number of drivable vehicles and different objectives make it varied and appreciated by those who are tired of the usual simulation games. However, the longevity is not the best, as once all the scenarios are completed, even in online multiplayer mode, the player can only start playing on the various maps available.
