Cyberpunk 2077: Preview - Gamescom 2019

From the first information emerged it was thought that cyberpunk 2077, the highly anticipated title of the Polish boys of CD Projekt RED, was not present a Gamescom 2019, the German fair dedicated to the videogame world. Luckily that wasn't the case and we got back to Night City before the game's release.

The demo shown at Gamescom 2019 is basically the same as shown during E3 in Los Angeles and therefore we will not dwell on the gameplay, of which we have spoken extensively, but we will deal with the technical and graphic side of the latest CD Projekt Red effort.

The demo opens with V, our protagonist in a male version, who wakes up after a difficult night. From the first seconds of the demo we can immediately admire Night City, the futuristic city that will be the backdrop to our amazing adventures. The metropolis, devastated by the disorder created by the various gangs, is truly credible and convincing. While we walk we will see the various NPCs busy in the routine of their daily life. On Cyberpunk 2077 there will be the day and night cycle, so during the day the NPCs will have to deal with very different and varied situations. The animations of the non-player characters are excellent and of a good standard.

Each neighborhood in Nigh City will have its own type of population and its own rules: we will never see a rich person enter the lower reaches of the metropolis or vice versa. If we enter a poor neighborhood and at a certain point we shoot a person. whatever, if no one has seen us, the event will most likely end up in oblivion. But if we do the same thing in a rich neighborhood, the police will start investigating until they find us. We do not yet know how quickly and brutally the police are operating. Night City from what we have seen, is an extremely lively and well characterized city.

Night City, according to the latest statements, will be smaller than the map that CD Projekt Red has accustomed us to seeing with The Witcher 3, but it will be rich in content, so the fun will certainly not be lacking. The metropolis, despite the devastation, represents a beautiful sight during the day, but it gives its best during the night, because in the evening Night City will be filled with neon lights of different colors that will make the city a unique splendor. Cyberpunk 2077 will immediately support real-time Ray Tracing which, without a shadow of a doubt, will be able to give even more realism and depth to the city and to the game itself. For example, we found ourselves in the presence of different volumetric fogs, made in an impeccable way: depending on the intensity they will make more or less beams of light transpire, reviewing the game world even more convincing.

After venturing around Night City and accepting the assignment from Placide, the Cyberpunk 2077 demo continues with a motorbike ride. Here the first defects emerge, in fact the driving session is not the best, with the physics of the bike's leaning not very credible and convincing. During the driving phases we can alternate the first person view with the third person view, in order to better enjoy the panorama offered by the. game.

After the driving session we finally get the action. We have seen different approaches to confrontations, both stealthy and not. Both the artificial intelligence of the enemies did not seem the best and Cyberpunk 2077 seemed all too simple. The enemies hardly noticed our presence, unless we were to cut their way or engage in a firefight: we do not know if this too simple difficulty is a prerogative of the demo, or the final game is really like that.

On the other hand, however, we will be able to make our way using the approach that best suits us. Thanks to the new technologies, which in the imaginary future of CD Projekt Red have been introduced into the human body, we can control the enemies, bend them our will or set them against each other. Obviously we will need the specific skills and the appropriate level. The developers on Cyberpunk 2077 will leave us full freedom of approach, so that we can enjoy the title as we please without being bound by a pre-established morality or actions.

Cyberpunk 2077 presents a good technical behavior, but below the expectations of what CD Projekt Red showed us at E3 in Los Angeles. The title presents a fairly evident downgrade, especially in global lighting where ambient occlusion seems almost completely absent. We don't know if real-time Ray Tracing effects were active in the Cyberpunk 2077 demo, but judging by the reflections it would seem not.

Despite this, Night City was still surprising and beautiful to look at. The title ran on a PC equipped with an nvidia RTX Titan graphics card. There were no serious frame drops and the title was extremely fluid.

Cyberpunk 2077 is undoubtedly the most anticipated title of 2020, thanks to the confidence that the Polish team has so far built with the Witcher trilogy. However, there are many doubts, especially as regards the technical sector, which has undergone obvious changes compared to what was shown the previous year. Cyberpunk 2077, however, manages to impress as regards the gameplay, extremely varied and with a practically infinite possibility of action.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be available starting from April 16, 2020, except for various postponements, and will land on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
