In the past few days we have been able to try Super Mario Maker 2 preview and what emerged is that we are faced with a real sequel to the famous first chapter of the series linked to the most famous plumber in the world. Making up your own Super Mario level designer has never been so fun.
Let's start with the adventure mode: Peach's castle has been destroyed and together with Toad and Toadette you will have to take care of its reconstruction. Between various levels of different difficulty and different mold (from the classic 2D to the new levels dedicated to Super Mario 3D World) you will become familiar with the controls and with the news and, let's face it, you will find yourself faced with what can be defined in all respects a very extensive tutorial of different game mechanics. In short, you will find everything that distinguishes the normal progression of the levels in the most classic Mario games.
The real beating heart, however, is the creation mode, which also in this case will see the players try their hand at a very complete tool that will allow you to manage everything you need. The various backgrounds available intersect with the choice of the type of game from which to draw inspiration (creating on the basis of a Super Mario 3D World is really nice) and will change the type of buildable terrain. Enemies, interactions with the environment, pedestals, walls: everything can be created at will and even the level and the oscillation of the sea will be adjustable. Also interesting is the possibility to choose between day and night, for example to influence the water (which will become poisonous at night) and the sounds.
Yes, because even the audio effects play an extremely important role in this Super Mario Maker 2, which wants to give players the keys to the total creativity that made the plumber Mario famous all over the world, also focusing on the possibility of customizing the sounds of every interaction and element. In short, there is really every possibility within the creation tool and to increase them we think the potential of Switch which will allow those who are playing to be helped in the creation by a second player simply by passing him a Joy-Con. So here is that in all respects Super Mario Maker 2 is a direct sequel to the previous chapter.
The multiplayer mode, both local and online, also returns, allowing you to compete with friends or strangers by taking advantage of the various levels created by the community, trying to beat world records by climbing the leaderboards. You can then leave an appreciation or vice versa report that the level was not to your liking. Some new features introduced are also interesting, such as the possibility of searching through an in-depth tag system that will therefore allow a substantial skimming of the levels based on the type most appreciated by the user.
Another possibility linked to Switch also makes its entrance in Super Mario Maker 2, meeting all those people who use Switch for its portability and who often find themselves using it without an internet connection. Thanks to the possibility of downloading the levels, in fact, you can arrive prepared in your travels by downloading the levels in advance to be able to use them at will while you are without internet.
Super Mario Maker 2 does not overturn what the first chapter had proposed, indeed it takes up everything, adapts it to Switch and proposes interesting additions that expand the range of offers of the title. While the real focus is on community creativity in creating new levels of play, the adventure mode (more a tutorial than a full-fledged story) and multiplayer offer a solid and varied outline that can pleasantly dampen long creation sessions. The review will decide the final judgment, but in the meantime we can say for sure that Peach's castle is in good hands.
