    E3 2018: Control - Preview

Remained in the shadows for some time under the pseudonym of "P7", finally the new Remedy game, published by 505 Games, was revealed during the Sony conference on the occasion of this E3 2018: it will be called Control and is scheduled for 2019 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Once again, Alan Wake fans expecting a sequel remained on their hands, as rumors speculated it as a possible Quantum Break 2 or even a multiplayer focused game. Although at first glance there actually seemed to be a connection with Quantum Break due to the aesthetics and some gameplay phases that referred to the previous Remedy title, Control actually turns out to be an unpublished and ambitious work, although still cryptic and full of mysteries that will be revealed over the next few months.

Control puts us in the shoes of Jesse Faden, the new director of the Federal Bureau of Control, an organization born to study and control the supernatural. But things are not going so well, as Jesse finds himself in his new position facing the worst of catastrophes, namely the invasion of the Hiss in our world, a dark entity capable of taking control of humans and of endow them with incredible powers. This is what we understood about the plot at the moment because the one shown to us in the presentation was rather incomprehensible without the proper context.

The protagonist, Jesse, as director is the only one who can use psychic powers with devastating force that allow her to protect herself from attacks by creating barriers, throw objects, dodge quickly and, among other things, even levitate. As if that weren't enough, our beautiful director is also equipped with a very special weapon, a sort of gun capable of exploiting the supernatural powers of those who handle it. It follows that no ammunition is needed to be able to shoot and the only disadvantage is the fact that after a sequence of shots it will take a few seconds to be able to fire again. The weapon in the future will be customizable and upgradeable, thanks to the ability to evolve and exploit its transformations depending on the situation. During a fight with a sort of mid-boss we saw her transform into a sort of shotgun capable of doing a lot of damage at close range

Control, according to Remedy, will be a third-person action adventure with sandbox elements, represented by the mysterious building in which the whole game is set. In fact, this building seems to be able to teleport people in various dimensions and these are freely explorable by Jesse not only to find items and upgrades for his skills and equipment, but also to undertake side missions with various characters whose purposes will not be limited to simply trivial rewards, but to expand the story and the lore behind.

However, we do not have very clear the level of exploration of this mysterious building granted and how much freedom we will have in discovering all its secrets., also because the demo they showed us seemed rather linear and without any particular crossroads whatsoever. We tried to ask the developers for more details, but it seems that the game is still in a very early stage and, as a result, many of the key elements of the game have yet to be outlined and defined.

If reading all this ranting you still haven't got an idea of what Control is, then know that it is normal, indeed. Paradoxically, we who have seen it are more confused than you in reading what it is about. Yet, despite everything, Control seems to be a product with incredible charm and convinces both in its aesthetic component and in that of gameplay. We only hope that the story will sooner or later have its own logic and that it can be decrypted in a simple way during the adventure. Remedy in this sense has never missed a beat, not even with complex stories like that of Alan Wake, so we are confident that Control could also prove to be a pleasant surprise. We are genuinely curious to know how the game will evolve, because it has undoubtedly caught our attention.
