In Dead Cells a parasite has taken control of a prisoner's corpse and pushes him into a crazy game, much like Souls, with a strong backtracking component. It's quite a difficult title and runes are incredibly important to survive (for other survival tips we'll leave you with this guide).
Unlock essential permanent upgrades to be able to take out increasingly stronger enemies. Esyas also allow you to reach other inaccessible areas, thanks to the abilities connected to them. We explain everything in this post!
The five runes in Dead Cells
Let's introduce you to the five runes in Dead Cells and how to find them.
Rune | Description | Location |
---|---|---|
Rune of Vine | Sprout vines on the map. Walk of the Damned | Walk of the Damned |
Teleportation | Fast travel between coffins. Toxic Sewers | Toxic Sewers |
Belier / Ram Rune | Traverse fragile walls. Ossuary | Ossuary |
Defiant Rune | Open daily door in Prisoner's Cells. The Black Bridge | The Black Bridge |
Spider Rune | Stick to walls. Insufferable Crypt and Sleeping Sanctuary | Insufferable Crypt, Sleeping Sanctuary |
Vine Rune
Vine Rune allows you to sprout vines with greenish spots scattered all over the map. Go to the Walk of the Damned and reach the large ledge. Kill the undead archer and get the rune he used.
Rune of teleportation
The teleportation rune unlocks fast travel between two pairs of coffins. After obtaining the rune from the vine, proceed to the toxic sewers. Move to the door operated by the switch, go down to the room below and defeat the Slasher. Retrieve the rune from the loot.
Belier / Ram Rune
The Ram Rune gives you the ability to break through fragile walls, the ones marked in yellow. Go to the Ossuary, press the button to break the yellow pavement. Defeat the Elite Slasher and claim the rune.
Challenging Rune
Very useful. The daily door opens in Prisoner's Cells. To get it, go to The Black Bridge. Defeat the Incomplete and collect the rune.
Spider Rune
This rune allows you to stick to walls, walk and run on them. In Insufferable Crypt, kill the Watcher boss. Continue to the sleeping shrine, kill the elite orb caster and retrieve the rune.
How to open the door to the Dead cells cavern?
To get to this area, the first thing to do is to make sure you have defeated the Hand of the King. Once you have defeated it, you will appear at the beginning of the map. Follow the giant and, after a short cinematic and go through the hole in the Prisoner's Room, you will get the key needed for access.
With the key in hand, head to the Cemetery. Once there, you have two routes to get to the giant's cave:
- On the first route, go to the Prisoners' Quarters, then use the Rune of Vine in the toxic sewers, then the Rune of Ram in the ancient sewers, and finally, get to the Unbearable Crypt.
- On the second route, go to the Prisoner's Quarters, then to the Walk of the Damned, then to the 3 Gate Walls of the boss cell, and finally to the Unbearable Crypt.
Once in the Crypt, use the key obtained from following the giant to access the cave. Upon entering, you will face the boss Conjunctivitis; if you defeat him, you will gain access to the Giant. After defeating the Giant, you will gain a second entrance to the Caverns from the Sleeping Sanctuary.
Where do I use the key to the Dead cells cavern?
Regardless of the route you choose, in the Cemetery you only have to use the key to access the Cavern. Once you have passed that level, you will be able to reach the Guardian's Sanctuary, where you will face the Giant and fight him.
What is it and how to get to the Sleeping Sanctuary in Dead Cells?
The Sleeping Shrine, an ancient altar dedicated to a deity, is covered in vines and adorned with stony statues of enemies. The exits to the outside, as well as the chests and jars, are blocked by locked doors. To open these doors, it is necessary to activate the shrine. When activated, the place takes on an orange hue and the statues come to life.
To unlock all the corridors of the inactive shrine, you must find the switch that "wakes up" the shrine . In the first playthrough, the search for this switch will be hindered by the Elite Sphere Thrower, the same enemy from which you can obtain the spider rune.
When activated, many enemies in the place come to life, revealing previously inaccessible corridors. In total, there are six corridors: two lead to a chest, two others to the exits to the outside, and the last two close doors with jars of 6 cells each.
To reach the Sleeping Temple, there is only one way, through the location of the Unbearable Tombs. Descend into the sewers (Poison Gutters), then advance to the Ancient Gutters and, upon finding a point to break through the fragile floor, you will arrive at the very Tomb of the Unbearable. From there, the route is straightforward and simple. Be prepared to face the Watcher at this location.
After defeating the boss, you will unlock access to the Sleeping Temple and obtain a very useful rune that will allow you to climb walls. This will make it easier for you to reach the Sleeping Temple via the Black Bridge.
There are two ways to enter the temple:
- Through the passage between the Village and the Black Bridge (safe zone). You will need the spider rune.
- Through the Poisonous Waste Zones, passing to the Ancient Waste Zones, then to the Unbearable Tomb and finally, to the Sleeping Temple. You will need the ram rune to use in the Poisonous Waste Ditches.
