Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Demon of Refuge

What would happen if you woke up inside a world as threatening, hostile and violent as never before? A world where the only visible light is to be sought within oneself, since darkness has embraced everything? Probably the simplest answer would be to try to survive. Survive at any cost to a hostile and threatening ecosystem, which reserves dark implications everywhere.

In the sepulchral world of Dark Souls, bringing home the skin is a bit of a challenge for anyone, but don't worry: Epic Videogames Guide is here for you. Get rid of the common enemies, which swarm the streets of Lordran, may not represent a particularly difficult obstacle, but getting rid of the various bosses scattered around the huge map (or maps) of the game will not be so easy. And here we come in: you want to defeat the Goat Demon? You want to get rid of without problems Orstein & Smough? Then you have come to the correct place! Let's start in order and let's take care, today, of the first boss of the game: the Demon of Refuge.

Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Demon of Refuge

    Strategy and useful advice

The Demon of the Refuge is one of the easiest bosses to defeat in the FromSoftware production and, certainly, the easiest to find. As soon as you arrive at the Refuge of the Undead and take the first (and only) opening door, you will find yourself face to face with the gigantic guardian, at first sight threatening and frightening even more than necessary. Being at the beginning of the adventure in possession of a miserable broken sword, the game offers you the opportunity to escape from the battle, but it is too early to celebrate: once past the tutorial area, in fact, the gigantic demon, equipped with an equally giant hammer, will be waiting for you anyway at the gate, ready to oppose your imminent escape with no holds barred.

In truth, after having found items such as equipment, weapons and shields, the clash with the boss takes on a rather low difficulty, also for the too predictable nature of the guardian. The boss, in fact, unlike many others that we will meet later, does not have a very rich technical park and is easy to dodge / block once you have learned the various attack "patterns". The first thing to do, once the fight has begun, is to get as close to the creature as possible. The closer you are, the better it will be, because you will greatly reduce the number of moves available to him. The ideal is to keep up with him, letting him attack, and then replicate with a couple of shots at a time, without ever overdoing it. The fight is even easier for the magical classes, since the demon is very sensitive to their peculiar attacks.

Keep in mind, then, that in case you want to get hold of his special weapon, the "Great Demonic Hammer", you will have to face the boss immediately: you don't have to run away at the first encounter but kill him immediately, without the aid of equipment and upgrades. various. An enterprise that is anything but simple, but don't worry: if you don't succeed at the first try, you can always try again in "NG +".

    Attacks

    • Vertical Attack - a blow that can be easily avoided by rolling sideways or just running around it, but capable of doing massive damage.
    • Horizontal attack - much more difficult to avoid but also less harmful. The attack in question covers an almost total range of action, and is able to hit you even if you were behind the boss. The ideal is to stand sideways to the creature as soon as it begins to perform it.
    • Aerial thud - predictable and easily avoidable attack, as the guardian will begin to levitate at a not very high height and then crash to the ground causing massive damage. To dodge it, just move away.
    • Seismic Strike - probably the creature's most powerful attack. It is a frontal lash with which the boss will attack you thanks to the power of his hammer, but do not worry: if you have followed our guide he will never hit you.

    Drop

    • 1000 anime
    • 5 Humanity
    • Great demonic hammer (if you kill it at the first encounter "without" running away)
    • Pilgrim's key (if you kill him at the second encounter, otherwise it will be given to you by Oscar di Astora)

Dark Souls - Boss Guide: Demon of Refuge

Although not representing one of the most successful bosses in the production, both aesthetically and at a strictly playful level, it is undeniable how much this creature can arouse great charm around itself. The first thing that comes to mind is: how did it get there? And why? Two extremely complex questions, to which it is very difficult to give an objective answer and which can dispel various doubts. The question takes on even greater significance if we take into account the genesis of the creature, one of the so-called "Sons of Chaos" originated in the remote Lost Izalith. Such a creature, in such a place, can have many meanings and none. It could have ended up there by chance, sure, but it could also have been placed there to protect the shelter. But by whom? Probably, the creature ended up in that place a bit by chance, perhaps keeping faith with its nature as a wandering demon, or rather "wandering", but this term would not be exactly the most appropriate ... the reason, however, we will find out further on.
