Game Awards: Cyberpunk 2077 will not be there

Backed by some awards already won on trust, Cyberpunk 2077 apparently will have to renounce the Game of the Year title, at least as far as the 2020 Game Awards are concerned. The last postponement (the third!) will therefore burn much more to CD Projekt RED, since in fact it will prevent its participation in the most anticipated event at the end of the year. As confirmed by Geoff Keighley himself, organizer and host of The Game Awards, the title will not be able to compete with the others published during the year as it will only be launched one day before the event.

Much like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a few years ago, Cyberpunk 2077 will first be eligible at next year's Game Awards. https://t.co/1gV1J4sDpV

Although the game switched to Gold phase, CD Projekt RED claimed that Simultaneous launch of the game on 9 different consoles will take longer to test and refine, the main reason for the delay. The Polish software house has publicly admitted in the press release that it has underestimated the duration of this phase, which, moreover, had already led to excessive use of the work crunch in recent weeks.

In reality, some rumors would like to attribute this latest CDPR delay simply to calling itself out of the fray of the busy November release calendar, proposing itself again at Christmas. Others, on the other hand, consider it very difficult to implement a game on current-gen consoles that, over the years of development, has become more demanding and onerous from the hardware point of view.

Anyway, with titles like Dreams, Animal Crossing New Horizons, The Last of Us Part 2, Crusader Kings 3, Wasteland 3, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Final Fantasy VII Remake this year already seems to be very inspiring for the claimants to the title of GOTY. So, Cyberpunk 2077's absence at The Game Awards is certainly a boon and a relief to the other competitors.
