CoD: Modern Warfare - Tested - Gamescom 2019

Gamescom 2019 officially opened with an event of Nvidia dedicated to new video cards RTX and Ray Tracing in real time. Here we had the opportunity to try all the games, already released and not, that support or will support Ray Tracing technology. Among these there was also the last effort of the boys of Infinity Ward, or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a title highly anticipated by fans of the saga and which will see the light on the shelves next 25 October.

As is now well known, Modern Warfare will have full support for light effects managed by real-time Ray Tracing. We had the opportunity to get our hands on Activision's new FPS to try, in addition to the implemented lighting effects, also the new multiplayer mode called Gunfight. It is extremely fast fights, in fact each round will last about 40 seconds. The team that first takes home 5 rounds wins. To win the victory, the team must eliminate the opposing team before the countdown expires, otherwise we will have to capture a flag positioned in the center of the map and try to survive. The capture is extremely fast, a few seconds will be enough to end the round.

The teams will consist of only two players, in order to make the matches very fast but at the same time extremely fun. On Gunfight we will not be able to select the loadout, but we will be given a different one every two rounds. It will be the same for all four players, in order to make the game as balanced as possible. Surely this mode will be very appreciated by all those players who have little time available and want to have a quick match.

We got to try Modern Warfare with RTX effects active. The video card in charge of game processing and lighting effects is Nvidia's flagship, namely Geforce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition. The game ran at a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The frame rate, despite enabled Ray Tracing, was found to be extremely stable and well above 60 frames per second.

As we all know by now, Infinity Ward has adopted a new engine. The first visual impact is definitely positive, and from the first seconds of the game we can immediately notice the graphical improvements obtained with this new engine.

The polygonal models of weapons, enemies and any object that surrounds us are really well made and defined. The textures, both those of the guns and of the environment, are of a high level, presenting a high degree of definition, something that did not happen in the previous chapters, resulting faded and poorly defined. The physics have been significantly improved, the weapons offer a very believable recoil and if we start firing in bursts, we will hardly be able to keep the rifle pointed in the same direction. We can not tell you anything about the cadence of the shots, because the map was extremely small due to the mode and therefore we have not had the opportunity to deepen.

The audio, a very important component in a multiplayer FPS game, is impeccably made: The sounds of the shots are realistic and immersive, as is the explosion of a grenade. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare offers a good spatiality of sound: during the games, if you pay adequate attention, we will be able to hear the sound of our enemy's footsteps in order to be able to identify him immediately.

Ray Tracing technology, introduced by Nvidia in its video cards the previous year, is finally starting to take hold and Call of Duty will fully support it since its release.

For the uninitiated, Nvidia's new RTX series has computing units available, called RT Core, which will process only and only the Ray tracing effects in real time.

On Call of Duty: Modern Warfare the light effects introduced have convinced us by half. This is because, for the moment, they are not as extreme as they can be on Battlefield V. Despite this, the Ray tracing effects are perfectly visible and recognizable, especially on weapons, where the lights will be most reflected. The environment will also react to the lights, reflecting in any shiny surface or puddles present.

The map we dabbled in was particularly dark and with few light sources, so most of the reflected lights came from guns or from a grenade burst.

In single player mode or in any other map, the RTX effects will certainly be more marked and better to see, but to know this unfortunately we will have to resist until October 25, the day in which Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be available. The release is scheduled for PlayStation 4, Xbox One e PC.
