Dark Souls II - Boss Guide: Predatory Magus

If all areas of the Dark Souls series return a sense of abandonment, among these the Cava Pietralucente di Tseldora stands out. We talked to Freja, the Duke's Beloved, who is one of the Four Lords of Dark Souls II, but the Tseldora chapter isn't closed yet. To get to the quarry and to Freja, nightmare of all arachnophobics, you have to cross the threshold of a church and first face another boss, the Magus Predatore and his Congregation.

The boss can be called the Pinwheel of Dark Souls II for its intrinsic ease and also the fact that they are normal enemies united by a life bar, that is the Magus Predator, a sorcerer, accompanied by two clerics and their faithful.

Their real strength lies in the number: it is easy to be surrounded and targeted by numerous hits, which is why you have to be much more careful than with any Pinwheel. The biggest threat, in our view, is represented by clerics, because they have the ability to heal the mass of faithful with miracles. The evil eye Deep Calm renders these clerics completely harmless, nullifying surrounding spells and all kinds of casting. Another devastating spell for this boss fight is Calm of the Soul, a miracle that deals with the lesser undead. The last enemy to deal with is the Predatory Magus, who will stay at a distance most of the time casting evil eyes.

Taken individually, all enemies in the church are very weak, which is why the boss is very susceptible to level when confronted and to the weapon wielded by the Chosen Undead. For better reference we have divided the attacks by creatures. The golden advice is always the same as for the entire Dark Souls series: don't be greedy.

    Attacks from Predatory Magus:

    • Dark globe: an evil eye easily dodged given its average speed.
    • Dark arrow: a bullet-shaped evil eye faster than the dark globe.
    • Wrath of the Dark Gods: an AoE shockwave that the Predatory Magus only unleashes when you are too close to dodge backwards. You can tell when he is about to make this attack when he crosses his arms for a few seconds.

    Attacks by Clerics:

    • Lightning bolt: it is the classic miracle, that is an electric launch launched at great speed. The damage increases when wet.
    • Healing: One of the two clerics will occasionally heal the undead around him, forcing him to start over.

    Undead Attacks:

    • Melee and jumps: they are weak and basic attacks that denote how empty are the undead following the real boss of the room, their danger only increases based on the number of attacks.

    Drop:

    • Titanite stele
    • 7.000 anime

    Lore:

La ruin of Tseldora it has its origins from a small cage that contained the most precious possession of its Duke: a spider named Freja which fate would have been to grow exponentially, destroy his prison and doom Tseldora forever.

To face this threat, a swarm of Drangleic soldiers complete with clerics end up encamping outside the desert ruins of the city, but Freja's children prevail, leaving emptiness and despair behind. Here then is that the Magus Predator arrives in the city and, akin to the dark arts, subjugates and gathers around him a pack of survivors (a congregation), who now blindly believe in him. Their only shelter is a church carved into the rock, while outside there is a world with almost dystopian outlines in their eyes.

The only known fact of the sorcerer is that he is related to Aldia, brother of Vendrick, who in his attempt to recreate a dragon is no stranger to experiments and rituals. His keen interest in the condition of the undead is perhaps the reason that prompted the Predator Magus to show himself to Tseldora as a savior, or perhaps the shining stone quarry has become nothing more than a ground for collecting guinea pigs. It is also known that King Vendrick had arather lukewarm opinion on the clerics, good only for ceremonies and their representative power - perfect, therefore, to be sent along with soldiers and see them fail miserably.

Upon the arrival of the Chosen Undead the chants that rise from the church are quieted and, after brief moments, a fragment of Tseldora's corruption is ripped away, giving the poor souls of Tseldora eternal peace.
