Dark Souls II: Boss Guide - Sentinels of Doom

Undeath is a curse. A curse that causes fear and the reason why, stone by stone, a called prison has been erected Lost Bastille. It is possible to visit this place of jailers and prisoners in two ways, one more particular than the other. Let's find out, because they could lead us to one of Dark Souls II's biggest initial threats: the Sentinels of Ruin.

Il first, the classic one and intended by the game, is to defeat the Knight of the Dragons at the Tower of the Flame of Heide, proceed, go down to the depths where there is an ancient port populated by pirates (the Desolate Pier) and from there set sail on a ghost ship , which leads directly to the Bastille.

Il second is unlocked by defeating the Persecutor in his arena in the Forest of Fallen Giants, examining the nest: the giant bird that proudly carried the boss has now become our ferryman and leads to a tower of the aforementioned Bastille, almost opposite to the ship.

The protagonist boss (indeed, the bosses) of this guide are considered optional, although they don't look like it. Two items are enough to jump the boss, the antiquated key (in the Lost Bastille and only in Scholar of the First Sin near Lucatiel) and a Stone of Pharros, but on the other hand you must have defeated two other optional bosses to skip the Sentinels of Ruin: the Persecutor and the Flexible Sentinel in the Desolate Dock. Is it worth it? Maybe.

The Sentinels of Doom are perhaps the first real deadlock for a budding player: these slender and elegant knights are three and their overwhelming number can put the unwary undead into serious trouble. They are women, even if not in the true sense of the term, and they call themselves Yahim, Ricce and Alessia. Perfectly alike, with the same attacks and movements, their strikes can quickly become relentless leading to several premature deaths.

Using the arena is the key to victory: The battle begins on a suspension bridge against Yahim, the first Sentinel to reveal himself. The bridge is long and narrow, but you must try not to fall into the atrium which serves as the ground floor. If it happens the other two Sentinels (Ricce and Alessia), instead of waiting for Yahim to take care of himself, they will all take to the field making the fight unequal.

Se the Sentinel should fall, wait: will come back. From this point of view, the fight against Yahim can be seen as a tutorial to then bring down the two remaining sisters. Once a Sentinel dies, you will have time to heal yourself before the next (Ricce) arrives on the bridge, always with a horizontal sweep. Unfortunately this time the third Sentinel (Alessia) will not wait as before, and in a minute she'll join the party too, turning the battle into a necessary one-on-two.

Once Alessia arrives, drop off the bridge: the atrium will be your new arena, certainly more wide-ranging. If the fight were to become one on three it would be more difficult, but obviously not impossible. Watch out for all three Sentinels and only use the attack windows when the field is clear. In Dark Souls, patience pays off, greed kills.

Let's go and see, as always, the attacks available to the first boss of the Lost Bastille, so to know the enemy, learn his moves and find us less unprepared. At this turn, the Sentinels are weak to blunt attacks and electricity.

    Attacks:

    • Vertical shot: loaded, is the blow with which Yahim will welcome you and one of the most common attacks in general. Side-dodging, it's a great opportunity to attack the Sentinel from behind.
    • Horizontal shot: also this very frequent, it is a horizontal slash avoidable by dodging by rolling backwards or through the hybrid halberd of the boss thanks to the i-frames.
    • Horizontal shots: they are simply two horizontal strokes instead of one, to the right and then to the left or vice versa. It takes more care than the single shot, but the rule is the same.
    • Stocked: the Sentinel in question will give a thrust with his weapon, that is to say a vertical thrust like a spear. Dodge exactly like the vertical shot.
    • Jump and crash: move more advanced than the classic shots, sees the Sentinels make a large jump and crash with the weapon extended. Everything happens rather quickly so you have to calculate the times well: too soon you will be hit, too late ditto.
    • Tornado: certainly the most devastating attack of the Sentinels, especially if done by several knight women together. The bosses will use their weapons spinning like a top for a good part of the arena. Do not even try to raise the shield because it would drain all the stamina, the best thing to do is to understand in which direction the Sentinel is going and run towards the other direction.
    • Shield launch: Rare attack, sees the Sentinels throw their shields against the undead like a new Captain America. Parable with the shield or rolling left or right, it is seen that they do not have the same bond that the Captain has with his shield, since once launched the Sentinels will no longer be able to pick it up (it will disappear) or use it to defend themselves.

Once you get rid of the Sentinels of Doom, explore the arena, which contains several illusory walls. In Drangleic Castle, just before the Throne Room, you will find five other Sentinels, one behind each stone door, who will give you the pieces of their armor when defeated. Try not to have all the doors open at the same time (they require a "special" payment)

    Drop:

    • 33.000 souls.
    • Soul Sentinels of Doom (creation, from Straid: Arrow of the Higher Seeking Soul).
    • Doom Sentinels Set (versus respawning ones from Drangleic Castle only).

    Lore:

The numerous Sentinels scattered around the world of Drangleic are formless constructs created in the image and likeness of an ancient order of knights. So big was there curiosity in the kingdom of Drangleic towards the soul and its study that there are those who lost their reason and who in every armor that makes up the order of the Sentinels forced a tormented soul to move for him, mindful of an old mission and a peremptory regulation.

Their origin is extended in Dark Souls III. By order of an ancient King - perhaps that of Drangleic, Vendrick, who crossed the sea and conquered - a company of horsemen was sent to the City of Rings, the place where all the knots (or almost) come to a head. They sought the dark soul, but failed, crushed by the tremendous Judges, and were forever trapped in the city as the first line of defense.

This dark tale with no happy ending went through the years and cycles, coming to compose in honor of the enslaved knights an order of bronze guardians. After all, what is the use of a name when there is no need for distinction, but for a single blind purpose?
