How to permanently delete a WhatsApp group

WhatsApp groups can be ugly or nice depending on which group you belong to. Some groups are very helpful and it makes sense to continue being a part of them. However, annoying groups must be deactivated immediately. And if it's feasible, you can also delete the group. But how do you delete a WhatsApp group? It's not as easy as hitting the Delete button.

Why do you ask me that? Because the Delete button does not exist by default in WhatsApp. You must first leave the group to delete it. Are you confused? There is no need. We will clear all your confusions about deleting a WhatsApp group in this post. Whether you are an admin or just a member, by the end of the post you will know how to permanently delete a group.

Delete a group as a member

If you want to delete a group so that members cannot interact with each other or, in other words, remove it from its root, you must be the group administrator. We covered it below. However, if you are a group member who only wants to delete it from their phone, you can too by following the steps.

Step 1: open the WhatsApp group you want to delete. Tap the top bar showing group information.

2 pass: On the next screen, scroll down and you will find the Leave group option. Touch it. A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm your decision. Tap Sign Out.

Once done, you will see that the group is still visible on your device. It's because the group hasn't actually been deleted from your device, you are simply not a member of the group anymore. It means that when you leave the group, you can no longer join group chats. In case you want to remove it from your phone, go to step 3.

Step 3: on the same screen, you will see that the Exit button is now replaced by the Delete Group button. Tap it to delete the group from your phone. A pop-up will appear. Tap Delete.

Deleting the group by pressing the Delete button will permanently delete it for you and will also remove all chat history of this group from your phone. However, the group or group chat will not be affected by the other members. They can still chat. They will simply get a notification in the group saying that you have left it.

Delete group as administrator

As an administrator, you are authorized to delete the group from its existence. This means that you can permanently delete it so that no one can interact with it. However, WhatsApp does not provide a direct way to do this.

Similar to other members when they leave the group, if you press the Leave button you will simply no longer be a participant but the group will still exist. If there are multiple administrators, the administrator rights will remain with them. However, if you were the sole administrator, WhatsApp will randomly make someone else the administrator. Even though you will get the Delete option once you leave the group, it will only remove the group chat history.

To delete the group permanently as an administrator, follow the steps:

Step 1: open the group you want to delete for everyone. Tap the top bar to view group members.

Step 2: here's the interesting part. As an administrator, you have the right to remove anyone from the group. You must use this power and remove each member from the group individually. To do this, press and hold the member's name and press the Remove button.

3 pass: Repeat step 2 for all group members. After removing all of them, exit the group as shown above. After exiting, you will get the Delete button. Tap it to remove the group permanently.

This method works regardless of the device or software. You can use it on Android devices (such as Samsung, OnePlus etc.) and iPhone.

Here's how to delete a group as an administrator and as a member. To further clear up your confusion regarding group deletion, here are some bonus FAQs.

Delete the Whatsapp group without admin

If you are not the group admin and yet want to completely remove the group from everyone's device, we are sorry to inform you that this is not possible. You cannot permanently delete the group without administrator permission. Only the administrator has the right to do this. Of course, you can only delete the group from your device as mentioned above.

Delete the Whatsapp group without logging out

Again, it is not possible to delete a group without leaving it. Since the delete option is not available by default, you must first leave the group to get the Delete button. Only once they have left the group can they be deleted.

Delete a group message

Unfortunately, WhatsApp does not currently grant administrators the right to delete a group message. For example, if a member posts an inappropriate message to the group, the admin does not have the power to delete it.

The message can only be deleted from the sender's side using the Delete for All function.

If you are bothered by spam messages from group members, the group limiting feature can be very useful. Using this feature, you can customize the group so that only admins can post messages and members will only be able to read them.

Clear group chat

If you just want to delete the group chat from your device without deleting or leaving the group, that's also possible. Here are the steps to get it.

Step 1: open the group chat you want to delete. Tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner and select More from the menu.

Step 2: tap Clear chat. From the pop-up you will get, tap Delete.

To avoid unnecessary group deletions, our beloved WhatsApp has hidden the delete function behind the exit button. Since groups are important, even the administrator cannot directly delete the group. So be careful when deleting them.
